Hi, is there anyone who would be interested in meeting up in North Manchester, or Manchester in general, to go Birding as a group? Modern technology is grand, but its quite lonely unless we can meet. I know there are groups outside of Manchester but it seems odd that a city of this size has no club itself....
In Britain, Willow Tit have suffered an alarming decline of around 94% since the 1970s. It is thought around 15% of the national population can be found in north-west England, with only 2750 pairs nationally. We want to better understand the Willow Tits presence in the area to design effective inter...

Just back from a week on the Algarve, based at Vilamoura. I was instructed it was not a birding holiday but was fortunate to find that Parque Ambiental, which had a couple of hides, was only a 5 min drive from the hotel, so it became my local patch with dawn and evening visits. Single visits to Ria d'Alvor a...

Hi I was considering purchasing a NIKON COOLPIX L320 and maybe any other Bridge Camera? Anyone know of any reputable sellers or anyone here selling? I do prefer to purchase directly from a buyer if second hand so I can see what I buy.
Im hearing of plenty stolen cameras recently , so please be vigilant, I notice a lot of people going for waxwings in some urban areas that you wouldn't normally be seen in , and remember how much that camera is worth around your neck . Just be careful out there, you would be surprised were cameras get stol...

A site in between Monsall estate and Harpurhey - I was scouting for potential Waxwing trees but couldn't see any berry-bearing trees. On a berry-bearing shrub there was a couple of Goldfinches and two Greenfinches, with Great Tits also visiting. 6 Jackdaws went over.
A Waxwing was present in trees in a car park at the junction of Crossall Road and Union Road this lunch - 9 were reported here yesterday.
I also picked one up mid afternoon in a hedge off the A537 Chelford Rd (Knutsford) approx 600 yds NW of the junction with Sandhole/Sandlebridge Lanes - estimate SJ79...

So, a short discussion started on the Elton Reservoir sightings thread recently, regarding the feeding of mealworms by photographers to a juvenile Cuckoo which had set up residence on site. Several birders got in touch with me expressing their anger and frustration at this action, so questions we...
Heads up, there's a report of a Black Throated Thrush in Wilmslow, I don't have exact location but anyone interested would be able to find out more no doubt. Be great if it's kosher and stays around.
Copied from the BTO's Nest Recording Site:
Mistle Thrush feeding 2+ young high up in the roof of the stand inside Old Trafford today (10 March 2010) during the Man United vs Fulham match. I have photos taken from the crowd, but the site doesn't seem to want to let me upload them.

My wife bought me "Bearded Tit" by Rory McGrath last week.
What a great read it was. I've always liked him. Don't be put off if you don't.
It really is a good book. Reads like an autobiographical novel. The bird watching references are similar to Simon Barnes' but funnier. It's full of sup...

Like many people I feed the garden birds and have found myself spending more and more on a wide range of different foods. Last year after a conversation with Peter & Norma Johnson about this they informed me about where they bought their food from and I have found them to be at least half the price of a...
