A Little Egret was seen two weeks ago, in the reservoir outflow to the River Yarrow. Seen from the Street by Tom Grimshaw and Jack Farrimond. With thanks for info.
Had a walk with the family around Monsal Head just a minute walk from the car park and we saw a male Merlin zoom past at our level just skimming over the tree tops heading towards the rocky outcrops to the right hand side of the car park as you look out over the valley. Was great to see and my first ever Merlin....

A successful trip in the end for myself and Alex Jones this afternoon at Broom Wood, Tiln, Nottinghamshire for the reported Melodious Warbler. The windy weather meant that although the bird was constantly singing, it was keeping very low in the pine plantation. Finally after 3 hours, our persevera...

It is with real sadness I inform of the passing of long-time Pennington Flash regular, Barry Hulme, following a battle with Cancer. Barry will be known to many, perhaps mainly via his posts on this forum merely due to the fact that he generally visited the flash so early, many visitors would arrive lon...

A few butterflies this p.m. (small tortoiseshells and commas), but the highlight was a largish, light brown bat flying over the river beneath Jim Fearnley bridge at 4.00 p.m! Given the location, the low flight over the water, and its unfamiliarity to me, I am near certain it was a Daubenton's. After a...

Leica APO77 straight version with 20-60x zoom. Optically good, the zoom lens was repaired by a non Leica repairer as Leica no longer do repair work. The lens is fine but numbers do not align. Scope is in good condition having had a Skua cover since new, cover comes with the scope but is showing its age. Lo...
An afternoon visit to Lincolnshire today started off at 1.00pm at Rosper Road Pools, Immingham for the reported Collared Pratincole. The bird had flown off 10 minutes prior to arriving and as it seemed to be in the habit of feeding mainly in the morning and evening, we decided to head for Tetney Locks t...
15/2.
The valley has been really quiet for several weeks now - but today
was a little better!
The sighting of a flushed Woodcock was a nice way for me to start
the morning - although I am sure that the Woodcock probably wasn't too pleased that I had disturbed its rest!
Also about - an Oystercatche...
What are the prospects for Red Kite breeding in the GM area? Despite odd sightings over the years, unless I am mistaken, they are yet to settle here. They seem to do OK on the wrong side of the Pennines, even quite close to major urban areas eg Eccup Reservoir near Leeds. But not GM. Why not despite similar...
Written by Robert Archer: This year, on 3rd May Peter and Norma Johnson recorded their 1000th Tawny Owl chick from one of their boxes! This is a tremendous achievement reflecting the amount of time, money and effort they have both put in to helping our local bird life. Peter has made and put up all the b...

Any idea whats in the photos - whilst watching the ducklings on my pond I saw this dead bird on one of the stepping stones, the feet were what interested me and the fact it was about Great Tit sized tail and body, but totally black plumage (we will never know the head plumage as it wasn't there). Only been th...

Visited this site for the first time yesterday with Mike R and Ian.
Superb site, Turtle Dove calling, lots of Crossbill, 3 - 5 Common Buzzard but the jewel, two Honey Buzzard displaying for about 1- 15 minutes, with plenty of wing-clapping.
Then on to Bempton for the usual sea-birds at point blank...
