Last week our rep brought in the Helios Fieldmaster ED85 DS Scope, a new product, an improvement to their previous Fieldmaster with a slightly bigger objective - 85mm compared to 80mm. I was seriously impressed with the performance of this scope that makes it a real contender in the middle price-ran...
My parents live in Devon so I keep an eye on sightings down there. I have noticed over the past few days reports from a number of areas of Huge Woodpigeon flocks. There were 20,000 reported in Sidmouth, 37,750 in Sidmouth and 45,000 in Thurlestone marsh. I don't remember seeing flocks this large up nort...
So, I've been birdwatching for about a year now, and while I don't get out anywhere as much as I should do, I can identify a fair few species visually. However, I'd like to 'up my game', and so I thought I'd get peoples' opinions on something...While I admit every person may give a different answer to thes...
Anyone been watching David Attenboroughs latest? Some fantastic footage on Sunday of immature female Sparrowhawks hassling feeding Jays It'll be on catch up and the whole series is worth watching.
Anyone who has been to Spurn will know that Spurn Bird Observatory has had to reduce its accommodation down to about 12 beds in the Warren Cottage after the Annexe was condemned. The Warren is also becoming increasingly at risk from coastal erosion. Added to all this is the fact the Obs does not own the W...
About three weeks ago I was out with the dog - a recently acquired rescue. I always take a pair of bins with me, usually the pair I keep in the car, but on this occasion for some reason I had taken my 12month old Swaro's. Unfortunately the dog decided to jump up at me for some unknown reason and I heard that hor...
I suddenly realised today that should I ever be in the fortunate position of finding a rarity (all those that know me can stop laughing now, ta) I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to report it on the twitter system. Do you just phone Birdnet? Or is there some other techy way of doing it?
Hawke Panorama Ed 82. Bought but never used, I have a Nikon Scope with its dedicated camera attachments. So I have never used it. Ring Ouzel - in trees by the 5-aside court, approx 2:45pm. I was alerted by an alarm call I didn't recognise, then the bird flew to a stand of trees fringing a row of houses and I lost sight of it. I got the impression it had dropped down into a garden. I went home, got my camera and went back but couldn't reacq...

Although not looking for a new job myself I always keep an eye out on the various bird organisations websites for interesting new posts. Presuming most of you watched Autumnwatch, I wonder who else picked up on these next points. Firstly...Michaela Strachan was amazed that Arctic Terns travelled 22,000 miles from the Arctic to the Antarctic, and Chris Packham agreed with her. I always understood it that talking in rough figures to...
So...I'm off to Bali next year on my honeymoon, and the missus will let me have a bit of time birding, included at least one guided tour. I thought I'd swat up in advance. As a result, I have been looking for a fieldguide to treat myself to, and have found there are about 5 options. Has anyone had any experie...

This post (which is light-hearted in tone) is sort of aimed at Chris Sutton and some of the other gents who were at Chorlton Ees on Sunday morning while waiting for the Short-eared Owl to appear- Chris said something about a new BBC Games of Thrones-esque medieval show which had annoyed him as the King o...

I know they're not exactly an uncommon vagrant these days, but has anybody seen the spread of sightings down the east coast and across towards the south west? Its quite incredible. I'm amazed we haven't had one in GM yet to be honest.
I have been seething from yesterday after getting a letter from Network Rail to say they will be felling trees 6 meters from the track, which is basically from the track to our border. There is the usual tripe of preserving wildlife etc. But if all the trees have been felled where with the birds go then. I...
Almost brand new. Unfortunately got rid of the box, but only used once (Stone Curlew). Bought for £240 It's a cracking scope with great field of vision etc. I'll chuck in my tripod for free, but the scope deserves a better tripod to be honest. Looking for £150 ovno for quick sale Pick up only from Monton,...
