France - near Eymet

This year's holiday gite is located about 30km north of Marmande, in Agnac near Eymet. To the west of Eymet there is a fairly large lake, Lescourroux, which we've visited twice so far. First visit was disappointing, with just Little Egret, Mallards, Herons and a fleeting Kingfisher. Second visit began with 5 Egrets perched on the trees opposite the two hides, and one of which was a Cattle Egret. Whilst watching these, a pair of Golden Orioles were seen behind the Egrets, and then a flock of 53 further Cattle Egrets arrived and joined the others in the trees. Rest of bird watching has been carried out from the site patio, or nearby lanes. There have been many more Golden Orioles seen this year, they outnumber the Magpies 8 to 1 in the nearby trees. Others include Hoopoes, Collared and Turtles Doves, Cirl Bunting feeding young, Stonechats, Kestrels, Buzzards, Hen Harrier, Black Kites, Melodious Warbler, Whiethroat and Meadow Pipits. We are off to Le Teiche reserve again next week. Jim Caulfield and Tom Jones
