I have had a report from Dave Wilkinson of a redhead Smew on the R. Irwell in central Manchester, on 28th January. I've emailed Dave to ask exactly where, but this is a different bird to the Wigan one.

However about 3 minutes after that I heard another one, so I jumped up out of the chair and ran into the front garden. It wasn't my ima...
Pete Berry and I ventured out onto Chat Moss, albeit rather briefly today and the first large stubble field on your right (heading south) past Olive Tree Farm (which is the one after the one with a canal barge outside!) looked especially promising with a large flock of over 300 Linnets, large numbers o...
Steve Collins had 2 Pink-footed Geese 'paddling' around Horrock's Flash yesterday whilst he was catching up with the Smew (still present). 'Downed' birds aren't that common, so has anyone else seen these birds before this date (or even today perhaps?). (Thanks Stev...
Again on Pearson's Flash today. Some Blackburn birders told me they couldn't find the Smew, but didn't go myself as too busy with the media! (see birding discussion page)
I am scheduled to do an interview tomorrow about Ruddy Ducks on BBC NW Tonight - the interview is to be recorded earlier in the day but I suppose they will show it in the evening.
