Just back from 2 days excellent birding in sunny Portugal. By using all available hours of daylight we managed a superb haul of 92 species including one Western Palearctic rarity and some WP introductions. Highlights, in notebook order, included:

There were at least 17 Mandarin Ducks on the River Goyt ,off Bongs Road,Offerton today,and of even more dubious origin,a drake Red Crested Pochard at Roman Lakes,Marple

30 to 40 lapwings seen flying over the canal near Newton Heath Health Centre about 1.45pm today.
In wonder if these aree our old friends the "Carpet right " lot who used to congregate on that building.[I must say that I haven't seen them on it on the rare occasions that I have driven past]

Big flock of Redwings 30+ just passed through my garden. Diving in the pond, investigating piles of dead leaves and perching up on every available branch.
First ones I've seen for several years in Withington.
I have received a report of a male Red-breasted Merganser at Gorton Lower Reservoir on Sat, 3 Jan, 2009. There have been no similar reports on this forum. Did anyone see this bird or visit Gorton on that day? Any info much appreciated.
