Following on from the brief exchange of comments recently on the Chorlton WP thread about the usage of voice recorders for logging bird records and whether they might be better than/worse than/no different from a traditional field notebook. I have for the last 6 or 7 years always carried a voice reco...

Last Thursday as I was driving down Stanley Road,Cheadle Hulme I saw a couple of Crows stood on top of a lamp standard. One of them looked very much like a Hooded Crow.As I thought I was in Cheshire I didn't bother to stop to check it out,it wasn't till I got home and checked the A-Z that I realised I was just i...
Went to see if I could find the Bittern that's been reported on the canal at Carnforth. It was a good 1/2 km past where it had last been reported but what a stunning experience.
The canal was quite busy with walkers, joggers and dog walkers which seems to have made the Bittern totally unconcerned with h...
I forgot to post this one. Last week we had a walk around the moor edges up Chew Valley and as we crossed the access road at the valley head, a flock of finches flew over. My inital thought was Twite, but I didnt have my bins. It was pretty windy so I dint really catch their sound. I have just listened to Twite o...
One of my work colleagues was telling me this morning that he has had a Golden Pheasant in his Marple Dale garden on both days of the weekend feeding on the scraps dropping from his feeders. He was interested enough to look up information on the birds and found that there are reported approximately 120 b...

Today at 12:00 a (jammy!) Lancashire birder, Bill Aspin, had not one but two Red Kites just east of Ashworth Moor Reservior. The first bird went south over Knowl Hill (where the lucky observer was) and incredibly was joined by a second bird just east of Ashworth Moor Reservoir. Both were very high and w...
I really enjoyed reading the first class article with brilliant photos on our precious Tree Sparrow population in GM in the Species Study section, which is in the "Articles, Identification Issues and Reviews" section on the home page of the website for those who may have missed it. It's a...
Just a warning to all Mum's, Dad's and carers!
Just a word of warning if you are thinking of taking kids to Martin Mere by train - the walk from the station to the Mere on the new footpath is not suitable for under 5's or pushchairs/buggies.

I appreciate that we all hold The Manchester Bird Forum website very close to our hearts and what is on it, within it and shared between those who use it is fantastic. However, without wanting to upset the administrator, whom I am very thankful to, I thought I'd start a new thread (althuogh I stand corre...

Unfortunately Judith didn't have time to follow her sighting up so it's well worth checking out if you're in the are...

Below is a typical "objection" to the ludicrous plans to build an industrial estate on a large area of green belt at the Cutacre site, which rather sums up the situation accurately.
"I, with hundreds of others, registered my objection in the informal consultation period, to the p...
