Heading up towards Rostherne and then into GM tomorrow. Anyone care to PM a site for Grey Partridge I could try? Missed them altogether last year - the only one I saw was in Sweden.
All BTO Online systems will be unavailable next Thursday 11th February,
from about 3am to 5pm, while we patch the database software. It's just
routine, but apologies in advance if it causes any inconvenience.
Best wishes

I've read in the local paper that United Utilities are replacing sewer overflow points in Dukinfield and Stalybridge to help prevent sewage litter being released into the river. Definitely a good thing This will start in April this year and last until summer next at various locations in Dukinfield...
2 Taiga Bean Geese flew over Hindley Green and landed on Westlake very briefly. They then took off and flew in the direction of the Wigan Flashes which will be checked shortly. (Information from Andy Makin)
A Shore Lark was found around 4pm today (30th Jan) just east of Over Hulton, Bolton. At the junction of Rosemary Lane and the A6 (just west of junction 4 of the M61) follow the footpath south and through Adises Farm, continue along and the Shorelark was on the top of the obvious large spoil heap to the east...
I know there's a 'dedicated'thread elsewhere but I couldnt find it - I'm sure Ian will be able to move this one if needed. Definitely 1 (possibly 2) Ravens around the Home Supporters car park at the DW Stadium. The car park is the dirt area opposite the Robin Park arena. One was perched on top of the lights...
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I found a Signet this morning at Ince Moss. I think he had a stomach infection because I found him walking on the canal on Friday and he was sick. Last few days hes been looking weak and lathargic. He doesn't have a tag on, and I don't know who to contact to have him remove...
Just a quick plug - if you're stuck for something to do on Saturday with the kids get down to Chorlton Water Park where the lovely rangers and the nice RSPB will be hosting a BGBW event - lots of info and stickers for kids.
There are other events aroound the region too so check out the website www.rspb.or...
I really love the Hen Harrier. I saw my first one (ringtail) about 15 years ago at Risley Moss one frosty January and it was a close up view as well. It came right up to the hide by the moss and stayed all day where good views could be had from the tower hide as it quartered the moss. Since then I have seen them in...
Is it ok for us all to keep feeding the ducks and geese bread?
i heard one Rspb guide coming up with some technical reason for why we should not be feeding bread to the birds, we all know in winter when food is scarce then any food is food but is it actually bad for them or the water?
i went to Longton Brick...
Cetti's warbler in bush by the car park at St Ives Station.--Showing really well[ and bloody typical did'nt have my camera with me!]-------Incidentally,it was a bit surreal, but exciting, to sit on the seafront sharing a cornish pasty with Turnstones!
Following on from my recent rant on the Wigan Flashes thread. I've got a few things I want to get off my chest without clogging up the sightings forum.
Firstly, why do some (note some, not all!) dog walkers (or doggers as I like to call them) look at you like you are from another planet if you are carrying o...
This has got to be an interesting thread.
Following Mels' railing against Magpies, it was Rachael's "Dead Duck" thread which got me thinking. I just don't like Muscovy Ducks at all. Ugly blighters. Make Feral Pigeons look attractive!

I note from the latest British Birds (RBBP report) that the taxonomic order seem to have been changed yet again! I'm getting to wish that DNA had never been discovered! Grebes have been moved again (must be feeling dizzy) and passerines have been shuffled all over the place. Are all our field guides su...
while travelling to work to Bolton from Westhoughton down the main road at Hunger hill just before the Tavern there was a flock of about 8-10 Magpie's flitting in and out of gardens on both sides of the road one poor bird while flying out of the garden and flying across the road was hit by a van and flew to th...
A walk this afternoon down Coppull Lane and into the Plantations just before the paths are closed in the valley bottom for 18 months while work takes place on the dam/weir system at the bottom of the Lane. Nothing on the river, which was high after overnight rain, but a Dipper on the Yellow Brook - just in...
Reported in today's Tameside Advertiser that the local Muscovy duck was found by readers, missing its head. They were hoping this was done by a fox- I can't see that some how. Park used to have a pets corner- suffered regular horrific attacks.
It was on the duck pond in Stamford Park, Ashton u Lyne. I ac...
Oil spill reported on Manchester ship canal at Eccles, quite a few canada's and ducks affected by all accounts. Possibly more on tonights local news.

Today I saved a life - I was sitting looking out at the garden when I heard a bird strike our kitchen window - it's quite a big window and we do have a couple of those cut out silhouette RSPB bird "scarers" that are supposed to help keep the birds from hitting the glass. They don't always work. Thi...
Hi all,
Just picked up my first pair of the above, went out this afternoon, in not all that good light, and they where still changing colour. The UV index is only 1 today, so in good sunlight, I would need a white stick!!
This of course affects the colour of everything. Anyone here use them generally an...
One at Buile Hill Park in Salford this afternoon with a flock of c100 Redwing and 1 Fieldfare A strikingly pale bird, mainly white but with some buff markings, has anyone else seen this bird ? -- Edited by James Walsh on Wednesday 20th of January 2010 12:56:09 AM
I took my little lad for a walk through the woods yesterday afternoon to feed the ducks. Saw 6 Jays flying down the centre of the dam then land in the bushes, never seen so many togerher all at once. I thought they were quiet shy and solitary.
