I reckoned I saw a Stock Dove at the Bunting Hide a few days ago but a very experienced birder told me this was unlikely as they very seldom visited such places. I now wonder if all I had was a feral pigeon.
I did get a photo of said bird which I have out onto my Flickr page and would appreciate any comments on...
Driving down the M56 towards the Airport tonight, I was alarmed by the number of trees which have been cut down, presumably to make the embankment "more attractive".
Are the relevant authorities just allowed to come along and cut down the trees??
Surely it has to involve some form of p...
Need I remind users of this forum to it's policy regarding the disclosure of ANY breeding birds?
It appears that the all important 'sticky' topics at the top of this forum don't get read very often and many new users haven't even bothered to read them. Please do. They are very important and not only...
Hi, new poster here, new to Manchester and reasonably newly (last couple of years) returned to birding (after a YOC childhood then disinterested teens and early 20s).
One of my interests is "genetically unusual" birds/animals - hybrids, odd plumage variations, etc. Ducks and geese...
been working hard trying to stay afloat in these difficult times so haven't been able to get out anywhere near as much as i normally would, it's been getting me down more than i had cared to admit to myself before this morning when i awoke from a dream where 53 bee eaters flew over my head heading south. i go...

5 LBB gulls swooping (and landing) in our back garden this afternoon. They were after the remnants of a roast chicken which I had put out. Although we only have an average size garden gulls will spot a chicken carcass within minutes, but it has always been BH gulls in the past, which are very wary and circ...
I'm no expert by a long way.But my nephew baffled me at the weekend. He asked whats the difference between a hawk and falcon? Looked through a few books but can not find the answer. I know allyou experts out there will no.cheers
Please excuse my copying a press release here, but this new survey should make a significant contribution to the national Bird Atlas project and the planned Greater Manchester Breeding Birds Atlas. What Steve Atkins has found from his analysis of our data is that breeding records of common birds ar...
If anyone was thinking of visiting Bolton town centre to see the Peregrines this weekend. Please don't. There is a huge demonstration going on on sat and whole town centre is practically sealed off all weekend. A lot of trouble is expected with hundreds of police drafted in.
Cheers Dean.
One heard only over Ashton -on-Mersey by John Butterworth on Monday 15th at 1545hrs. He was indoors at the time but the window was open. By the time he got outside, it had disappeared.
hi all..my uncle really enjoys birdwatching but we dont like him goin out on his own because he is disabled and only capable of walking really slowly. he would like a friend to go with preferably someone who has mobility problems. he would prefer someone who can drive so they can take it in turns to drive...
3 little egrets and a single great white egret in front of Griesdale Hide all this afternoon; along with a single male peregrine that was showing off brilliantly to a hide-full of eager spectators. It spent at least 2 hours intermittently swooping from one dead tree to another and preening, only abou...
A Wheatear was in a field nr Brook Farm, nr Altrincham Crematorium, Carrington Moss, on Tuesday March 16th. (Information from Peter Day, former county recorder) A Chiffchaff was singing not far from the Tom Edmundson hide at Pennington Flash this morning, too. -- Edited by Judith Smith on Thursday...
Following on from the brief exchange of comments recently on the Chorlton WP thread about the usage of voice recorders for logging bird records and whether they might be better than/worse than/no different from a traditional field notebook. I have for the last 6 or 7 years always carried a voice reco...

Last Thursday as I was driving down Stanley Road,Cheadle Hulme I saw a couple of Crows stood on top of a lamp standard. One of them looked very much like a Hooded Crow.As I thought I was in Cheshire I didn't bother to stop to check it out,it wasn't till I got home and checked the A-Z that I realised I was just i...
Went to see if I could find the Bittern that's been reported on the canal at Carnforth. It was a good 1/2 km past where it had last been reported but what a stunning experience.
The canal was quite busy with walkers, joggers and dog walkers which seems to have made the Bittern totally unconcerned with h...
I forgot to post this one. Last week we had a walk around the moor edges up Chew Valley and as we crossed the access road at the valley head, a flock of finches flew over. My inital thought was Twite, but I didnt have my bins. It was pretty windy so I dint really catch their sound. I have just listened to Twite o...
One of my work colleagues was telling me this morning that he has had a Golden Pheasant in his Marple Dale garden on both days of the weekend feeding on the scraps dropping from his feeders. He was interested enough to look up information on the birds and found that there are reported approximately 120 b...
7-8 Waxwings in the car park of The Range warehouse at Astley Bridge. This is the other side of the lights from ASDA where they often have been in pervious years, but still on the ring road round Bolton. Thanks to Frank Obertelli.
