Sunday 1st August will see 1400 people swimming Pennington Flash (blue-green algae permitting) as part of an 'Iron Man' event. This leisurely pursuit also includes a cycle of 112 miles, followed by a marathon!!
While that lot are dipping their toes int flash it could be an opportunity for good wil...
A juvenile raven was hopping around the grounds of partnership house, Rochdale today. It seemed quite un-fazed by the the people coming and going from the building.
its easy to forget just how big ravens are until you see them at close quarters.
This is my first ever post so please bear with me.
I work in a yard at side of river in Stalybridge so see it's many moods. Have watched the Dippers for last 6 years. Breeding success every year but raising chicks another story.Starts off with 2 or 3 chicks but soon whittled down to one. I always suspecte...
Saving the Species - on Radio 4 17/40. What is the future for our farmland birds? We have been following the re-introduction of Cirl Buntings into Cornwall: an RSPB led conservation project where Cirl Bunting chicks have been taken from nests in Devon and released on specially selected farms in Corn...
A female/juvenile Black Redstart was stood on a stone cattle-pen at Hurst farm, between Ringley and Whitefield at 9 am, bird then flew to the farm buildings, but i could'nt find it again. Turn off the A667 Kearsley to Whitefield road at old hall lane, across from stand golf course, and park at the top of...
I'm planning a trip to the Dee Estuary from Stockport tomorrow and I don't know the area very well. Can anyone recommend any spots for a good bit of estuary birding?
Many thanks

Hi Everyone
I've only just joined the Forum, but have been Birding at Frodsham for years.
I noticed some posts regarding good places to pick up Yellow Wags, and without doubt the best place is around Marsh Farm from Mid to Late September, when the Farmer is grazing his cattle there. You can usually...
Having found the Westport Lake Ring necked Duck quite quickly this morning decided to visit an old favourite of mine - Elton Hall flash near Sandbach - on the way home. In former years birders risked life and limb here as the only decent viewing point for the main flash was actually at the side of a fairly...
what a lovely little bird, after trying to get one on my camera for a few weeks yesterday oh yes there it is,this camera is so frustrating. got it thou well i know what it is,if you know what i mean.he has tormented me several times by flying into the cover when i see him then as i walk further a long the river h...
No, not by a peregrine or even a marauding gull, but a gannet.
On Sunday this gannet decided it wanted to sit well away from the main gannet colony, on a ledge where guillemots were breeding, and there was some understandable threat behaviour going on.
Then the gannet's big flappy feet dislodged a...
I recently mentioned in another post about the number of photographers I had seen one day in Bunting Hide at Pennington. It was also quite enlightening today at Abram to see just how many folk were there with cameras as opposed to scopes. It started me thinking. Ten years ago photographers were a much r...
Reet. The weather is scorching. I`m tetchy. I`m in the mood for a rant.... I have received through my door today the "Impact" magazine from the RSPB. They send it out to members who actively campaign/donate to specific projects. I (sometimes) do the latter, hence the receipt of the said ra...
Having viewed the site I note a Red Kite has been seen flying over Sharples towards Egerton. I have today seen a Red Kite 100% positve sighting over the Egerton Moor off Longworth Road.
I was awoke last night (4am) by a bird noise that gradually got closer and closer and then further and further as though it flew straight past my house (Moss Bank, St Helens).
To my uneducated ears it sounded like a wader - I willnow attempt to describe the sound:
singular note repeating of even pitc...
A round of applause, please, for John Harrison who farms at Moss House Farm and Malkin Wood Farm on Worsley Moss. He moved 45 clutches of Lapwing eggs this spring when rolling his fields, and put them all back again. Most of them fledged and they had a very good season.
Some farmers do care!
A Red Kite over Romiley at 5.15 this evening going south. It was just by St. Chad's church and not much higher than the spire. It might be hanging around the Chadkirk/Goyt Valley area if anyone is out that way tonight.
Good luck.
Andy

Had a look at this area today, off the A6 near Westhoughton, for a TTV . There's a large industrial estate within the tetrad. I heard but didn't see, Oystercatcher, and wondered if they could be breeding on one of the roofs there, as they do in Heywood and Rochdale. If there's anyone out there who works on...
Visited today and glad to report that there seemed to be more Little terns this year. Also plenty of Arctic terns but the Warden was concerned about the high levels of gull predation. Most birds have nested on the right hand side beneath the grassy embankment so you cannot actually see many nests, but p...
As we probably have many fluffy fledglings decimating your feeders at the moment, a little bit of a reminder about desease and garden feeders and to keep your feeding area clean. We have noticed (first time I have seen signs of this disease) a young Greenfinch, a particularly subsectable bird to this...
Both Ian McKerchar and I are having problems with Orange email at present (as it John Tymon and anyone else using Orange as a server). Emails we are sending are not reaching their destinations, particularly to NTL World, Tiscali and AOL servers. Orange are very apologetic but don't seem to have any ra...

Can Cokatiels and Budgies survive for long in the wild,I have been told that they are attacked by other birds for being strange.
If so how do Ringed Necked Parakeets survive ?.
A sweep of some of our Barn Owl boxes today found 16 young in 7 boxes, 11 of which were large enough to ring. Another box had eggs only, and one box had failed completely after young were seen earlier in the month. A better than expected result given the cold winter.
