GREAT SIGHTING THIS PM OF A MATURE TAWNY OWL SITTING IN ONE OF THE LARGE WILLOW TREES ON THE SCRUB LAND ADJACENT TO THE RIVER. I THOUGHT IT WAS A CAT IN THE DIFFICULT LIGHT BUT IT THEN WENT HUNTING. MADE MY DAY REALLY
Photographs of the Pied-billed Grebe at Rossleague in County Cork, Southern Ireland today seems to hint at it being the same individual as the Hollingworth Lake bird. The bill 'stripe' fits as does the Hollingworth bird's broad eyering particularly on the upper-front section.
Could it be? A f...

Recently the numbers of birds in my garden have significantly reduced after next door bought 2 cats. Anybody got any ideas of how to deter them from entering my garden?

This week whilst walking around Heaton area Gr Spotted Woodpecker around Tudor Av also Nuthatch. Down by Middlebrook, Dipper spotted, near Ladybridge Lane stretch going towards Bolton.
i don't know whether this is unusual or not, but today near Abbey Village i saw 3 male pheasants perched in a large tree at least 25 feet above ground.
i didn't know pheasants flew this high or could safely land in a tree.
it just seemed a bit strange to see them perched there.
is this normal.
This thread was originally started on the sightings section and I have moved it here for a more fuller discussion should it receive or require one. It is an interesting point and I'm sure both sides (ringers and 'non-ringers') have their opinion to which point I felt it worth giving it's own thread. Le...
The bad weather is bringing more birds into the garden, several Redwings though they keep getting chased off by the resident Blackbirds. Another first this a.m. was a Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Very briefly 1 Redpoll but this bird had a distinctive White band over its eye, I am not sure if this is a Sub Species or not. 2 Robins. These birds seemed to wan...

Hi all, I'm dean from mossley, east Manchester. I've been birding seriously for around five years and I'm gradually becoming more confident with my sightings. One bird I'm hoping to see this winter is brambling. Would anybody know of regular spots in my part of the world where I may possible have a goo...

A (very fortunate) member of the public in the Moss Side area of Manchester has had a male Black Redstart visiting her garden to take mealworms since the New Year. The bird has been photographed and I will hopefully be publishing them on the galleries once permission is granted (they are cracking!). A...

I have been working in the south west and on Wednesday they had the heaviest air frost I have ever seen when I got to my car in the morning there was no ice on windows but all the plants and trees looked like those silver artificial christmas trees of old. They had crystal spikes over an inch(25mm!!) long. I...
Reports for yesterday and today are being posted on the Durham bird Club Forum concerning a scatter of 34 dead birds being picked up in just a 2 mile sample section of coast from Roker (N. Sunderland) to Whitburn. Along the Durham coast as a whole the picture could involve many hundreds.

For those who may not know about this scheme, it is run by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, a government department based at Lancaster university. Corpses of all owls and predatory birds (raptors, also kingfisher) are sent in by members of the public and analysed for all the various pesticides t...
Why does the BTO feel the need to produce a new logo every few years - this is the 3rd in my relatively short membership (about 20 years I suppose). The RSPB doesn't do this. Don't care for this latest effort, especially the colours. And the ring recovery site doesn't work any more (www.ring.ac) - instea...
I am hoping that we can raise the birding profile of Hollingworth Lake with Rochdale council as a result of this grebe. For several years recently (at least 10!) birders have been trying to get a boom laid across the entrance to the nature reserve pool, as there are regular encroachments by rowing boat...
