Some might think that this would be better placed in the 'out-of-county' birding section but as it has a great deal of relevance for us in Greater Manchester, here it is. I've often been accused of being 'over-zealous' in my removal and protocol of the posting of breeding species in the county but I'm a...

The last of the Swifts have left the area of Houghton Lane, Swinton. Every year fewer and fewer birds return. We used to have 3 pairs nesting in the eaves of our house, now it's down to 2 and the groups of birds that used number 10 to 15 flying around screeching has now been reduced to about 5 or 6. The Rspb are...

Hi All,
As some of you know, I lived near Elton 1969-1973 and did some of my early birding there. That's before Warfy was born!!
As I worked in Warrington and my priority was raising my two very young boys, I was never able to do more than a quick scurry round, (mainly at weekends sandwiched between my fa...
On the subject of escaped birds (parrot sp. on Ashton-in-Makerfield thread), how far would you go to see a bird which you knew to be an escape? If your immediate reaction is that you wouldn't - if someone told you there was a Budgie outside your window then you would have a look. If it was in next door's gar...

Dave Steel has kindly copied a tape for me, made by Norman Rowbottom, who now lives on Anglesey, of Nightjars on Astley Moss (now the peat extraction site) in 1980, also with young, and Long-eared Owls wing-clapping and calling. Really evocative. If anyone out there has an up-to-date email for Norma...
