News on the Terns, I don't think the rafts have been vandalizes, but the one on the main lake may have been hit by a boat, sometimes youth clubs turn up with boats and things. some of the wooden biocks that made a hide-a-way for the chicks have been knocked over. Today there were 2 adults and 3 juveniles flying around , before going on the raft. One was being fed a fish. The 2 young on the raft on the wildlife lodge have gone , they were very small and have probably been taken by the young Heron, it will eat anything that moves. Also about , 83 Swans including 3 cygnets, 1 on the main lake and 2 on the river croal, 130 Canada Geese, 2 Greylag Geese, + 20 Goosanders on the river Irwell at Nob End, same birds from Clifton last week, i think ?.

But more sadley both nests of terns appear to have been predated or vandalised. No chicks at all there this am. Just one adult. Raft on main lodge appeared to have been tampered with. Nest on main res 2 chicks were near fledged a week ago so could flown. Nest on back lodge which had three chicks originally were much younger so couild not have fledged. Swan also appeared to have lost chick. Pretty poor visit really.

Cheers

I very recently (18th Feb) asked the chief warden if he could put a surround on the rafts, as one of the regular birders there reported that the tern chicks had fallen off the raft and been lost. His reply is below:
Hi Judith

Your email is very timely as yesterday we went out to the tern raft and, following advice and comments from birders and colleagues, put a wire fence around the edge of it as per the rafts at Doffcocker. There is already a lip and gravel on the raft (frozen solid yesterday!)So hopefully it will deter the coots and other birds from using the raft and allow the terns to breed successfully.

I will be leaving next week but if you have any further comments please contact my colleague Matt Dawson.

Many thanks

Andy

But apparently there is another raft?

Terns breed on them. Wiring should deter some birds like ducks and geese from using it, makes it easier for the terns.
