Walk along Moorbottom Road to Crowthorne produced a grand total of 21 Stonechat (some in Lancs) this afternoon..A good year for them, mainly seen in the Bracken patches.
Also along the west facing edges Wheatear, 5 Raven, 8 Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, 4 Buzzard and great views of a Merlin coming out of Red Brook and chasing Meadow Pipits over White Hill
Full Moorbottom rd loop over to Edgeworth this afternoon. Fairly quiet on the Holcombe side of Red Brook yet the other side was absolutely teaming with life along the path.
x9 Kestrels
x4 Adult wheatear (2m 2f)
x6 Stonechat (2 adults 4 juvenile)
x20 plus meadow pipits (mixture of adults and juveniles)
x20 plus juvenile goldfinch
x6 Carrion crow
x1 buzzard
x1 green woodpecker (heard only)
And the star bird of the day for me was a single female Whinchat, a first for me in this area
Full loop of Moorbottom rd this evening 15+ kestrels quite a bizarre sight, made up of seperate families of newly fledged juveniles and adults, mainly dog fighting with each other in the air, all spaced out equally along the vallys edge. On the Edgeworth side there was an unfortunate buzzard being pestered by 4 juvenile kestrels too
Last night around the Moor rd area I was greeted to the lovely sight of a very successfully fledged family of kestrels. 4 healthy looking juveniles all flying around being very vocal with both parents frequently dropping in voles from above.

Highlights of a 3 hour walk round the moor this morning- Cuckoo still calling at top end of firing range, pair Stonechat, 1 Wheatear, 3 Curlew and 10 Lapwing. Also post breeding flock c120 Starling including lots of juveniles, and Willow Warbler, Whitethroat, Meadow Pipit and Skylark still singing.
Couldn't find the Ring Ouzel or Cuckoo this morning, but a real highlight in the form of a Red Kite that flew SW over the firing range being mobbed by Crows. Also Dipper, Lapwing, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Wheatear, 2 Stonechat, 1 Redpoll and 1 Whitethroat.
4 hour hike around the Moors today, very quiet compared to this time last year, apart from the green woodpeckers that were literally yaffelling from all over the place!

X5 Green woodpecker, loads more heard, could have been the same birds yet actually saw 5 different individuals.
10+ wheatears
10+ meadow pipits
x4 stonechat
x1 kestrel
and the highlight of the day was witnessing a hunting Merlin near to Crowthorn rd that flew past us at lightning speed chasing some meadow pipits.
Just attempted a loop of Moorbottom rd on my mountain bike yet had to take the biggest detour ever around the top of the moors due to the MOD using the firing range. I'm glad in a way as I came upon a quarry just off Crowthorne rd on the Edgworth side of the moor and spotted a pair of ring ouzel foraging in it along with a pair of brambling.
Lots of wildlife seen today, of note:
X1 green woodpecker heard calling from the trees behind the public carpark on Lumb car rd
X1 wheatear along Moorbottom rd
X1 golden plover up on the tops
Numerous meadow pipits and skylarks up on the tops (skylark in photo)
X2 ring ouzel
X2 brambling
I heared Curlew calling from a few fields as I was cycling back to Affetside too
A good 4 hours spent covering an extensive part of the moors and saplin wood area. Most of the time spent in thick cloud and rain, saw one single skylark and had great close up views of 2 woodcock that I accidentally flushed, they were about 100 metres appart roosting in the heather on the top of the moor near to the Edgeworth boarder.
4th afternoon visit of the week trying to find Hen Harrier, still no luck !. Did however see a Little Owl(GM Year tick 165), still find it hard to believe I have not seen one at Elton this year. Cheers Ian
Yesterday afternoon, covered a large area of the moors by bicycle.
Meadow pipits in abundance, X2 kestrels. X1 little owl. Plus I startled a green woodpecker that was foraging just off the path on Moorbottom rd. Which in turn startled me!
One, probably two Grasshopper Warbler still reeling this morning. Lots of Skylark and Meadow Pipit singing as well. Also 1 Kestrel, 3 Swift and 4 Swallow over the moor.
Had a quick look for the cuckoos on Friday evening but was told that they were live firing on the ranges on Thursday afternoon and will be all weekend so perhaps not much prospect of any further sightings.
4 Stonechat-1 pair and two singing males, Buzzard mobbed by a pair of Ravens, Green woodpecker, two mating Kestrels, Linnet, 6 singing Skylarks, flock of Goldfinches, Goldcrest, Reed Bunting Male, Tawny Owl, Coal Tit, quite a few Meadow Pipits, Song Thrush in full song and two Fieldfare.
06:30-08:30am in the hope of seeing Short Eared Owl at first light but failed to see it.
3 Fieldfare
17+ Meadow Pipit heard a lot more than seen
1 Pheasant
1 Kestrel

Cheers Steven
