Cracking patch record this morning when a Manx Shearwater was found on the flash. When most of the patch watchers caught up with it it was semi-beached at the SW end in 'Mound Bay'. Later it was seen to have made it back into the water and was swimming around happily with the Black-headed Gulls. Later still (mid afternoon) tehre was no sign of the bird, either here or on Budworth Mere. We all hope that it managed to take flight and continue on its journey rather than being predated by a large gull or Mink or the like.

Quick round up of the more noteworthy birds for 'The Patch' today: Ruff on Neumann's Flash early evening in the company of 3 Redshanks but mobile and had moved on late evening. 1 LRP on Kid Brook Spit by Budworth Mere along with 3 White Wagtails & 7 Pied Wagtails that again passed through. Over 1000 Sand Martins over Budworth Mere with just a single Swallow noted by several observers. Singing Blackcaps at several sites (inc Marbury CP, Neumann's Flash, Haydn Pool), singing Chiffchaffs everywhere. Orange Underwing moth on the wing at Neumann's Flash - a day flying moth that at first glance could be mistaken for a small butterfly such as a skipper. Cheers Paul

Marbury CP and Neumans Flash

Neumann's 06.30 - 08.30 sunny with a light breeze

As I walked along the path toward the flash big flocks of Canada Geese were leaving - the area was very much alive in the morning sunshine. Searching through the Lapwings on the spit I came upon not just the one Curlew Sandpiper , as on Thursday, but three biggrin.gifbiggrin.gifbiggrin.gif - giving really excellent views. They were joined by 2 Little ringed Plover. A short time later a Spotted Redshank flew in but didn't stay for long after a Sparrowhawk put all of the birds up and finally a juvenile Golden Plover came in. A cracking couple of hours birding, watching the waders.

On the way home from a short trip to the Wirral yesterday called in at Neuman's Flash to find a Long-billed Dowitcher on the spit in front of the hide between Neuman's and Ashton's flashes. I have seen this species previously but this was a really nice specimen giving excellent views. Also nice to meet Mike Baron again, I hope Billy gets better Mike.

Hi Jason,

It was the first time i had been so i dont know the area well enough to know where we were, it was in a large open area flying between one small forest area to the next, only no more than five mins walk from the car park, if you are walking away from the car park down the long straight path that is in the open then it would be on your left hand side area in the forest edge closest to the path, two hunderd yards to your left from the path, i hope this helps, the black redstart was in the same area, good luck

Visited Marbury today with the kids in tow but what an excellent place [bar the crowds] for some good woodland birds and photographic opportunities. Luckily a friend at work had tipped me off about taking some seed and peanuts so I placed some of both at the Woodland hide which bought in loads of birds and eight squirrels - also meant some casual visitors got to see more than they would have! [hope the wardens don't mind some extra feed...]

Then walked up the side of the mere to the far screen and back so didn't cover a big area but still managed:

Great Crested and Little Grebe
Cormorants, various gulls and waterfowl
Kingfisher - fly by
Nuthatch x2
Jays x3
Coal, Great, Long Tailed and Blue Tits
Treecreeper
Goldcrest
Goldfinches
Pristine male Bullfinch - stripping buds from the trees in the middle of the car park near the ticket machine

And all the normal woodland stuff, I'll definitely be back!

A couple of hours with no rain around Marbury and then to Neumans in the fading light found nothing out of the ordinary at either place - lots of Great Crested Grebe and Cormorants at Marbury with what looked likely to be a sizeable Starling roost building up. At Neumans 100+ Curlew and plenty of Lapwing coming in as the evening light faded. At least managed a couple of hours without getting soaked smile.gif

A pleasant early morning stroll around Neumans/Haydns Pool produced Green Woodpecker, lots of Swift, Swallow, Reed Warbler, Chiffchaff and of course the Black Swans.

Then over to Marbury in the hope of finding the Lesser spotted Woodies at their nest site - too late the young had fledged over the weekend but had nice views of a circling Peregrine and several Garden Warblers alongside the mere.
