0730 - 1030, Brooks Drive area to Clay Lane & Wellfield Lane. A fairly quiet morning, despite high hopes with the clear skies and sun. Perhaps the annual April northerly airflow has dampened migration for a bit. Might have missed a good un though..
Singing birds of note: Goldcrest, Stock Dove, Reed Bunting, Whitethroats. Other spp: Linnet and Meadow Pipit in the abandoned fields, Bullfinch along Brooks Drive.
Annoyingly, a mystery bird flew out of an overgrown field and straight into the sun, giving a call which i don't recall hearing before. Grrr...

Conditions not so conducive this a.m. but nevertheless 2 GrasshopperWarblers giving their rich fruity song from 2 adjacent abandoned fields was really nice, and another Timp tick i believe. Male and female Kestrel were staying close together, a couple of rank fields probably to their liking. 2 Redpoll over. Across the road for a wander round Henerz's old patch of Davenport Green, which was v quiet - singing Reed Bunting and a pr of Stock Dove and a pr of Oystercatcher over were the best.

Really enjoyable morning 0650 - 0900 in the Brooks Drive area, started off with more than a touch of frost. Apart from the usual suspects, 2 sp of wader were unexpected. Highlights included:
Whitethroat at least one male seen then heard adjacent to an overgrown field between Clay Lane and Ridgeway sports club. Also male Pheasant here. Swallow one over twittering cheerily. Stock Dove heard "singing" then seen in the copse at the back of Ridgeway sports club fields. It flew out with several woodpigeons but was the first bird back. I think this is my first sign of possible breeding in the Timperley area. Reed Bunting - one singing from the same field as the Whitethroat. G S Woodpecker one drumming from Fairywell Wood, where a Blackcap gave its rich, fruity warble and 4 Buzzards disputed their territorial boundary. Willow Warbler - 2+ in the area. A pr of Lesser Black Backed Gulls on the playing fields, then 7 over high to the north and west.
Several Linnet over, and one Redpoll.
Tree Pipit - one over north calling, a Timperley tick!
Curlew first heard bubbling then later seen distantly taking off and heading south Oystercatcher calling as it flew over to the north.
I also had only my second sighting of Mistletoe in Timperley.
Yesterday a MeadowPipit was flying around over the horse field on Alder Drive, either trying to land or recently disturbed.

Singing chiffchaff by the Bridgewater Canal this afternoon, near the Riddings allotments. Hybrid Mandarin Duck still between Brooklands and Sale on canal bank.
And not far from Sylvan Ave to Smiths Fields, lots of short grass and tall trees. Could be a dispersing juv? My mates dad had one on his lawn on Bonville Chase, Altrincham one or two summers ago.
Great record if so. (Unless it's a Belted Kingfisher).

Bit gobsmacked to find a subsinging Redwing in a secluded thicket on the outskirts of Timpers this afternoon, took me a while to convince myself i wasn't stringing!

9.4.15 - one oystercatcher over Fairywell Wood and adjacent field, flew from direction of Wythy. Also Swallow over and Linnet over calling and a Blackcap singing as it made it's way merrily along the hedge towards the wood.

A Yellowhammer was heard calling in the tall hawthorn hedge adjacent to Whitebeam Close near to where it joins Fairywell Wood. Then seen close briefly as it flew, this is i think my first ever in Timperley in 35ish+ years of birdwatching. I'm not sure where the nearest regular birds are, but think they're relatively thin in the countryside to the south. The nearest birds might be - or at least used to be- along Sinderland Lane, Broadheath.

King George V Pool - had a quick stroll around the partly frozen pool this afternoon - a good number of species present including the usual band of Black-headed Gulls, 3 Common Gulls, a Lesser Black-backed Gull, a female Goosander, a Grey Heron and a grey Wagtail on the stream.
Getting occasional Owl calls on golf course this autumn and winter, up till about five years ago Tawny used to come to my garden and pond area regularly, at that time the hooting was so regular I assumed they were breeding on golf course!.
Walk along the canal from timperley to sale with my lovely wife on Wednesday late report due to computer glitch birds seen. As follows House sparrow 10 Coal tit1 Blackcap 1 Tree sparrow3 Black headed gull40 Blackbird 6 Robin 4 Blue tit 8 Carrion crow 2 Starling 10 Canada goose 21 Mallard 9 Wood pigeon 8 Collared dove 4 Long tailed tit 14 Great tit 6 Coal tit 2 Magpie 12
Had a singing sedge there one year! Usually reed buntings then, but are they still there I will check. Also had jack snipe (disturbed by my dog I am afraid)!
Hi Keith, that's a nice little area you look out on there. I used to have a look round it in my lunch breaks when I was working on Park Road near the canal. Glad to hear the nature reserve is still there, warblers inc. whitethroat in the summertime, and it would sometimes get quite a few Snipes in a cold spell. Keep us posted.

0740 - 0900, same area again. Fairly quiet tho still a bit of migration with flocks of Fieldfare and Woodpigeon over, no Pinkfeet though. Felt like some birds had actually moved out eg some of the Chaffinches and Blackbirds. Also had Reed Bunting, Meadow Pipit, LBB Gull (ad and first winter) and female Pheasant, plus 2 Teal over north.

0720 - 0945, similar circuit. Clear skies, hard frost. A bit of migration evident, skeins of Pinkfeet numbered 50, 9, 150, 50 & 200, only two skeins were audible. 2 smaller geese were in one of the flocks. Also Redpoll sp., Siskin, Woodcock, Reed Bunting, Bullfinch, Mipit, Stock Dove, Buzzard.

This morning, 0730 - 0830, same circuit. Skein of Pinkfeet over due east included a smaller bird, most probably a Barnacle but can't be sure. Consequently I didn't pay much attention to numbers but a quick estimate of 170 - 180 ish. Lots of Blackbirds in this morning feeding energetically on the hawthorn and Rowan berries. 2 LBB Gulls on the sports field, Reed Bunting calling nearby.

Bit of a flying visit back to my old patch for a few days before heading back to N Wales. Yesterday dawned really nice, and for once I saw it, thanks to a handy 4 hour jet lag. A fox was in the field behind the house, nice start. Walked along Brooks Drive, and through the fields to Bowdon Rugby Club and back from 8 - 10 a.m. It was one of those late autumn mornings where birds were on the move, some clear skies in some places overnight but also scattered showers to bring things down. And the forecast was for it to deteriorate. I bet the vis miggers on both sides of the Pennines had a good morning. 41 species in total, including Fieldfare, Reed Bunting, Skylark, Grey Wag, Siskin, 3 Redpolll sp., Chiffchaff, Linnet, Stock Dove.
Today 7 - 8.30 a.m., much fewer birds, both species and overall numbers but new sp were Bullfinch over calling, a Brambling, and G S Woodpecker
