i saw a red kite at 1.40pm off the m66 southbound on the left handside. it was flying fairly low over the hard shoulder and then disappeared into the countryside to the left - to be mobbed by crows.

Whilst Ken Haydock and Jill Mills were doing their atlas tetrad yesterday (11th) they had a male Hen Harrier at Green Nook, Coal Pit Lane, Smithills Moor and 13 Crossbills flying from Walker Fold Woods NE towards Sheep Cote Farm.

According to Birdguides there`s a Little Auk present this morning at Blackmoorfoot Reservoir in W.Yorks - JUST (about 4 miles) beyond our border..................Balls ! Why couldn`t it have chosen Castleshaw ? ?

Hundreds of woodpigeon, fieldfare 1 goldcest 5+ coal tits lots, and loads and loads of cones,,lovely cones just waiting for crossbills to feed on them .....but guess what they are all at watergrove.

I noticed today that Sorrowcow Pond, on the S side of Pennington Flash near the yacht club, is full of Floating Pennywort, a highly invasive alien plant, probably unwittingly introduced by anglers. Haven't seen this particular nasty in this area before though I believe it's around Etherow.

Visit this morning. An adult winter-plumaged Kittiwake was a surprising but very pleasant find on Ogden Reservoir this morning. It showed well, when not being pestered by Black-headed Gulls! This is my first record of this species here and the first record at Piethorne since 10th April 1999...
