Hi
I'll be visiting Manchester for the weekend with 2 chums(one of them is a Makem and we are going to the Man Utd game) and I have Sunday free to go birding. I will have to rely on public transport and will probably not have a scope with me. Any thoughts on best reserves-would Martin Mere or Marshide be ab...

In response to some enquiries about 2 weeks ago, I've been trying to find out what's going on at Light Hazzles.
The situation as I understood it, up to Anne Symonds, the UU ranger at Piethorne, going on long-term sick leave about a year ago, was that she put seed down on Wednesdays and alternate weekend...

as all of us here are nature lovers, i know you'll all know how tragic it is when a single tree is felled in the name of man's insatiable appetite to live the dream of lumberjackery and the lumberjack's life, but when 3 species are mercilessly hacked with giant axe, double handled-saw and chainsaw and go...
Just to bring it to your attention, please read the current restrictions in place for accessing Rindle Road via Higher Green Lane, Astley Village on the 'notice board' of the website.
I know there is no right answer only opinion but just out of interest who'd actually count the following: Red Breasted Goose - seen at Knowsley earlier this year with a flock of feral Barnacles. Initially I'd put it in my Feral folder as it were, but then the Martin Mere WWT website notes that its back thi...
A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling has been found today by Mike Killelea in Birtle, near Rochdale.
The bird has been feeding with a Starling flock (in back gardens) along the B6222 Rochdale Old Road, approximately opposite Holden Avenue (250 yards past Fairfield Hospital).

Hi all,
I'm competing in the Anglesey Marathon next Sunday 20th September. I'm hoping, aching limbs permitting,. to stay for a few days birding after. I was wondering which sites at this time of year on the Island would be worth a visit.
cheers Dave Phillips
The weather over the next few days looks extremely promising for drifting central european migrants over to the UK and more specifically the east coast. Anyone planning a day to Spurn etc? A poorly car means I'm looking for a seat across there
37 Barnacle Geese briefly this afternoon at this high-altitude reservoir just in GM, seen by Jeff Cox then flushed by a helicopter and flew to White Holme next door(Yorks). Good photo on Calderdale Birds blogsite. Thanks to Alan Nuttall for the information.
I've just caught a house sparrow in my back garden - it appears to have injured its wing, it cannot fly and I don't want one of the local cats to get it.
Can anyone suggest who I could contact/what I should do next?
Thanks
Whilst waiting for the well documented North Cheshire Hobbys this evening I was distracted by a very distinctive two note call - very piercing and one knew I was not familiar with.
I couldn't get on to the bird, until it flew past me and away, a non descript leaf warbler.
On checking calls this eveni...

I've just had a detailed summary of House Martin nests at Northenden from Peter Helm. In 2008 there were 13 nests. This year, the same locations were checked and only 5 found.
That about sums up the House Martin situation this year.
It's raining again in this part of the world, and with the athletics not back on until teatime, I was faced with the choice of doing some Killer Sudokus, or swatting up for a forthcoming birding trip, or submitting this.
This won. So here's what's involved:
Often, when driving on a longish twitch wi...
