I was at Prestwich Metrolink Station yesterday (Sat) morning. I saw two jackdaws walking along the tram lines, the actual rails. They walked along the rails for quite a long way, looking down at either side. I imagine this is a regular thing, and that they were looking for food. Anyone else seen this? T...
I am sorry to have to announce the loss of yet another area that was an oasis for birds in the middle of the concrete desert.
I was lured to Bredbury tip about half a dozen years back by reports of jack snipe, and although I never saw any I thought it was a great little place to check out in winter. This was ma...
Today there were 2 Great Northern Divers on Hollinworth Lake with a second bird joining the long stayer. How did they do that? They are not particularly vocal so I doubt the 2nd bird just happening to be overflying Hollinworth and was then attracted down by calls. Alternatively the birds could have re...
A couple of letters in the Man. Ev. News tonight complaining about a large part of the park to be ripped up for astro turfed fooball pitches. Who votes these lunatic councils in.
There is a website to try and stop this but we have given the paper away.

Coming into work this morning, driving along the slip road to get on to A666 i saw a buzzard flying very low almost level with my passenger window. Running along the hard shoulder was a stoat or weasel with the bird in hot pursuit. Would a buzzard take something like that? I bet them little fellas put up on...
just come across a dead sparrowhawk in the road near work (wilmslow) should we leave it to the foxes or do people want them for any reason. (it looks like a natural causes as there is no blood but it could be road kill.) -- Edited by brandon mulhern on Monday 23rd of November 2009 04:57:08 PM
It seems some of our lapwings still have a taste for city living. A couple of birds still around the Hollinwood area recently and 2 today in Newton Heath, probably still looking for the L'Oreal building!
Hello all,
One group of birds I've always struggled to see (as do most I presume) are the Owls. Is there anywhere around Manchester that is good to go spotting for them? I live in Salford, near the University, so the closer to there the better.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Robin
I've used the search and didn't see any other mention of this so I thought I would post it The RSPB are currently in the process of taking over management of a new reserve near Saddleworth - Dove Stone. It will be 40km2 of moorland with a full range of visitor activities centred at Dove Stone Reservoir. Th...
I've just found a very vague record in my notes of a possible Scaup at penny in 2002.
The only date i have is the year, not sure why
Could someone with a copy of the 02 county report please check if any were recorded and give me the dates? It's not a tick or anything, just a loose end that's bugging me.

Don't know if this is the appropriate place for a thread of this sort......but here goes. Being a bit of a gas-bag I like to chat to people when I am out and about and bird watching. Not only does it make the day even more enjoyable but you can also learn a terrific amount from people with other interests. Th...
Several of us have had really good views of the Leighton Moss Bearded Tits on the grit trays this autumn.
I realise that Bearded Tits need the grit in autumn because they are changing from the soft insect diet of summer to the harder, mainly reed seed diet of winter, and that the grit sits in their gizza...
Dennis Weir had a Snow Bunting today (probably male) perched on the handrail of the new footbridge on the east side of Mast Road at SD658138 ( not far from where you can park if you drive all the way up to just short of the masts.
Dada! Here it is! November to January is the season to eat game. If you have access to a game shop like Evans in Didsbury you can eat like a king for the price of a takeaway kebab (honest!). And it doesn't have to be hung till it's stinking and black - in fact I don't really like it hung too much. Here's a classi...
My mate Tony was asking me this am about the best cameras for digiscoping. Said I didn't know what was out there now - my Coolpix 4500 is distinctly old technology now and frankly I was never that happy with the results due to the slow shutter response speed. Tone is using a Leica APO Televid 62 (old one not...
We headed off to the coast today deciding to steer clear of the Shorelark at Southport
We made our way first to a place called Barton, on the way to Myerscough Quarry, where a Common Scoter had been reported on the canal, we failed to find the Scoter, but instead found a mixed flock of Tree and House Spar...

After seeing a few reports of the RND that's been at Westport for a few weeks I finally got a chance to go and have a look for it this morning. There were plenty of Great Crested Grebe, Pochard and Coot plus a flock of between 70 and 90 Tufties. After continually walking and scanning the main flock I found a p...
I called in at the new Ramsdales Hide at Pennington today, for the first time since it opened, and was quite frankly miffed.
People went to some considerable trouble to produce lifesize painted 'sihouettes' of a number of bird spp that were fixed to the walls and ceiling, and there were also conveni...
