I was really excited this morning to discover the route around the SSSI, thanks to the guide & aerial photo on this site. Up to now I have only ever been down the roads and one or two side paths. What a fantastic place it is. Beautiful morning light today, and totally lonely - I could have been in a Scott...

We have had baby sparrows and baby blackbirds in our garden. We have also had magpies circling and coming down trying to get at the baby birds. Fortunately both nests are clear now so all the babies have flown the nest. Best of luck babies.
Hi All,
In March I am going to Florida for 2 weeks on a holiday, but I plan to do some birding too. I have hired a vehicle out there, anyone ever been birding here before who can name some good birding locations?
Also in August of this year I am going to Iceland for 4 weeks with work. We are going to be busy ca...
Following our trip to Gilfach Nature Reserve today, we (the Bolton RSPB Group) moved on to spend 2 hours on the Elan Valley Estate. This is just to the southwest of Rhayader. This Estate covers 180 square km. of the valley, the massive reservoir complex, and the woodlands. Today we just looked around C...

Just having a clear out an found a copy of the LOS publication Winter Hill to Yellowhammer Lane (1992). It's quite an interesting read (journal type ) so before I bin it I thought I'd see if anyone fancies it. -- Edited by Ian McKerchar on Sunday 13th of May 2012 09:15:57 AM
An odd one this! Does anyone know anywhere dippers can be observed from a path running along side the river and on level with the river, and isn't elevated above the river so as you're looking down on the bird? If anyone know such a place could they PM me? I'm not bothered about distances too much, just in t...

Hi, Can anyone please tell me why Rare Bird Alert, Birdguides and websites of a similar nature are still announcing the Flamborough Head Atlas Flycatcher as 'Possible Atlas Flycatcher' when it is completley obvious that it is an Atlas Fly? Why, after catching and examining the bird, are the BOU stil...
While driving to Stretford this morning, a cuckoo flew across High Lane a short distance in front of me. It was just before the Wilbraham Rd. traffic lights. I have never seen one before but I recognised immediately it by the striped underbelly and the shape and markings on it's tail. Has anyone else se...
Whoah there all! I seem to have popped the ringpull on a can of worms here. I was only trying to encourage Graham to get out there and not wait for some imagined blissful combination of great birds in the warm sunshine! Yes agreed all kinds of birds to be found: the Western Bonelli's Warbler at Arnfield Re...
Greetings all, I've been living in Manchester City Centre for the last 8 weeks. I'm using the recent weather as my excuse to not get out and find some nearby birding patches. I am after any tips for sightes that are an easy commute by bike or public transport from the city. I am an Australian, so I'll be hap...
I've currently got problems with blue bottles that appear to be coming from a sealed chimney area. It's probably due to a dead pigeon that's got stuck there. Can anyone recommend a chimney sweep in the Swinton/Salford area who may be able to assist in removing the dead bird. cheers Gary Mills
It's May already folks and with it the serious business of keeping breeding birds off this forum ensues. Please read the sticky posts at the top of this forum. I will not be editing posts to remove any breeding bird comments but WILL BE DELETING THE WHOLE THING I'm afraid. I have not the time, energy nor p...
This evening I've seen a short-eared owl carrying prey into a young plantation (but despite hanging around for 30 mins in the cold..this was not repeated). Can I assume this is evidence of breeding ?

I'm sure most people on here have heard about the satellite tagging of 5 Cuckoos last summer. Well, following their epic journeys to the Congo to spend the winter, two have now made it back to Norfolk and you can see their remarkable journeys on the BTO website [url=http://www.bto.org/science/migr...
Got home from work to find the lid of my nestbox ripped off and the 3 House Sparrow chicks gone. Seeing as the box is 30 feet up I can discount Squirrels as the culprits. I'm guessing Magpie, Carrion Crow or Jay - all of which have been hanging around my garden this week :(
Is it just me or is the adult Dipper drawing on p273 of the 2nd Edition Collins Bird Guide unduly plump? The adult male Waxwing on the same page seems equally so. Or is it just my poor eyesight out in the field?

20-60X80 angled scope. Comes with stay on case. Bought new for my girlfriend, used it twice for about 10mins. Decided scoping wasn't for her. This scope is as brand new. Looking for £80. Trafford area, would deliver within a few miles for free.
Absolutely heart breaking news from the uni project. It seems that this winter weather has wiped out 3 of the 4 chicks. I thought it looked bleak when from noon to about 3.30 there was not a sign of life from under mums protective wing. To make it worse, i've heard the male has perished too. I hope its all ru...

.... but I know on here I might get a sensible answer or six! I still have my birding L Plates on - been doing it serious-ish-ly for about a year give or take. This site is a brilliant resource for ideas of nearby places to visit, and I've had some great sessions at Pennington Flash, Horwich Moors, Astley Mo...
