Sightings from this am included:
Knot still on spit from Horrocks hide also redshank (earlier on sailing club shoreline).
Water rail showing very well from pengies, singing Chiffchaff near benches in east bay and c. 60 Redwing in trees near Morleys farm many in full song which made for an amazing sound.
Earlier today there was a smart male goldeneye on the flash c midday. I think the location is marked as 'the point' on the trail maps dotted around the reserve.
It was a good day for ducks, with at least 18 goosander also plus the usual wintering suspects.
Decent few hours round the flash this am in what started very wet with poor visibility and ended with warm sunshine.
1st winter Mediterranean Gull bathing and preening with Black Headed Gulls in pool in sheep field South of Byrom lane. Water rail flushed from small stream under slag lane near recycling plant then landed and fed unconcerned on wet reeds.Green woodpecker first heard by Bill Harrison whilst sat in Horrocks hide. Calling loudly for c.5 minutes from large trees in centre of golf course then flushed by magpie and flew west over reserve area.
Other birds seen included single Woodcock, c. 130 Redwing, 22 Goosander, and 31 Cormorant.
Also 3 male Pochard were in evidence on Teal Scrape - an unusual location.

Certainly another sign of the species continued decline Paul. Seem to remember when the Canvasback was on Teal Scrape back in 2002 it was associating with quite a number of Pochard.

Also 3 male Pochard were in evidence on Teal Scrape - an unusual location. More predictably but nonetheless impressive, 29 Goosander and also 29 Shoveler!
3 Skylark were singing over Ramsdale's Ruck and 4 seen.
Refreshingly, there was a dog walker keeping her dogs off the Ruck because of the Skylarks, and encouraging other dog walkers to do the same.
4 Lesser Redpoll feeding in alder trees near the reedbed viewing screen past Teal Hide.
