I've decided, for various reasons, to make Daisy Nook a prime patch for myself.

Pick of the stuff from today: 11-1pm

1 Great Crested Grebe, undeterred by the fishermen, on Crime Lake
3 Grey Wagtails on the river (no Dipper despite my very best efforts)
1 Jay
1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, Male (and another heard)
3 Nuthatch showing well near the disused canal bridge - a super place to see birds, with 2 Dunnock here and lots of Blue, Great and a few Long Tailed Tits.
More Nuthatch heard

I scrolled down here and people were mentioning Dipper near Oldham Road around the weir - where exactly do they mean i.e all the way up to Lees or elsewhere?

10.00 am this morning a splendid male Goldeneye on Crime Lake, (1st time I have seen one on there) together with a Great Crested Grebe which arrived on Tuesday 21/2/12
Dipper and Grey Wagtail on the river Medlock. Also 2 seperate sightings of Goldcrest.

Today, really a notch chilly below what it is in my neighbourhood!

2 Treecreeper, 2 Goosander (pair cruising the river) Single Nuthatch only, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker heard. plus lots of Wren Robin and a single Dunnock + usual tits.

20 Blackheaded Gull plus a host of Moorhen, Coot and Mallard on the Crime lake/stream

No Water Rail nor Dipper. would have been nice.

Sat 5th Nov. 07.45 - 08.30 hrs.

From Oldham Rd, Bardsley along bottom of Boodle Woods.

Followed river best as I could hoping for Dipper or Kingfisher. No joy !

An abundance of Nuthatch ...... always been plenty here.
1 Grey Wagtail.
1 Redwing.
Sparrowhawk.... heard but not seen.

Pretty quiet but a bonus of 6 vocal Whooper Swans going over (east to west). Were very high up.
This would make them heading towards Leigh or Wigan if they did not veer. Approximately 07.30 hrs, I was wondering if anyone else saw them ?

Yesterday in the fine Autumn sunshine: 1 Kestrel hovering near the fishing lakes, plus 1 Grey Heron, circa 30 Mallard, 5 Moorhen, lots of Coot.

No luck with Dipper along the Medlock homewards

Had a look on Crime Lake yesterday, difficult to confirm but appeared to be a pair of Great Crested Grebes with young, hidden by overhanging willow. (Sunday 3-7-11)
Went back this morning on my way to work (6.45 am 4/7/11) and saw 1 adult catching fish and the other with at least one chick on its back, possibly 2 but difficult to tell.

A short walk up the Canal and then up Riversvale this morning.

Pr Bullfinch seen plus others calling
2 Nuthatch calling
2+ Blackcap singing and 1 female
2 Chiffchaff
Family party of Grey Wagtail included at least two young birds, 4 birds seen in total
Coal Tit
7 Great Tit (family group)
G S Woodpecker calling
Female Mallard with 4 ducklings

A walk around the other night produced all the usual stuff. Blackcaps seem to be everywhere. And the Great Crested Grebes were on Crime Lake along with a Sedge Warbler.

I did see two guys sat by the lake with air rifles holdals. I hung aroudn for a bit to see what they were up to.

I am pretty familair with Lesser Whitethroat call and I have seem them nearby in the past, but it wasnt one of them!

Nothing out of the ordinary last night. Swalllow numbers on the increase and lots of Chiffchaff and Willow Warblers.

Didnt see the pair of Great Crested Grebes on Crime Lake.

Another call issue just past the vistor centre. My initial thoughts was a Cettis Warbler, but the call wasnt quite there. Another trip me thinks to find the blighter!

pootle round daisy nook today. 11.30 till rained off at half past 2

highlights were

swallows 3 + 3+ 4
black caps 3 2f 1 very lucky male all in same tree
willow warbler 1 singing
chifchaff 6 singing
jay 2
nut hatch 2 both in same tree together
wren 3

crime lake
2 grey heron
2 mute swan
c20 mallard
15 canada goose

we also heard one frog calling in one of the broken canal sections

Led a "dawn chorus" walk around the valley and Boodle Wood today. Chiff Chaffs, Willow Warblers and Blackcaps are all well established in territories now.
Saw a pair of Treecreepers gathering nesting material, Nuthatches from 4 locations,
Swallows are back, Lapwings appear to be settled, possibly 6 or 7 pairs, 3 or 4 Pheasants (never saw any 5 years ago), 2 Herons, Pair of Great Crested Grebes on Crime Lake, G S Woodpeckers from 3 locations, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Coal Tits and Great Tits with nesting material, 3 Song Thrushes, Mistle Thrushes have fledged and left the nest from 1 location, Mute Swans not on a nest yet.
Once everyone had left and I took the dogs out I came across a Lesser Whitethroat singing near Crime Lake, quite a scarce bird for Daisy Nook.
With all the more common stuff we totalled 40 birds in 2 and a half hours.

The blackcap was at least 10 foot from the river wink.gif & the grey wag was on a rock on my side nana.gif

We went for a walk to Hartshead Pike through Daisy Nook and saw the Great Crested Grebes. Nice to see them there again. They used to be on Crime Lake many years ago.

I had a couple of hours walk around the Daisy Nook area today 5/3/10
2 Buzzards (seperate locations)
Male GS Woodpecker drumming, female nearby feeding.
6 x Teal
18 lapwings
Male Kestrel
Male Bullfinch
1 x Pink Foot Goose with the Canada Geese.

Yesterday 4/3/10
Dipper singing on Medlock & Grey Wagtail
Treecreeper & Nuthatch in Boode Wood
4 x Pheasants
5 Redwings
13 Fieldfare
1 x Buzzard

3 hours walk around in the snow yesterday produced

loads of blue and great tits

think i had a peregrine over was low and fast and looked like it from the fleeting views i got.

nice one andrew.   grey wagtail also nest here and ive seen a roe deer further downstream.   have you seen any woodcok in the area?   apparentley they occur around park bridge but im not sure exactly where to look

5 dipper is a good number on this much improved river.   if youre interested, a pair can be watched in summer at the nest they have used for several years just below the weir upstream of oldham road
