Unusually yellow Goldfinches

We took a walk yesterday along the Transpennine Trail near the Rope & Anchor in Dunham, we were heading east towards Altrincham. Amongst other things we saw quite a number of Goldfinches which seemed to display far more yellow on their chests than I have seen before and I wondered if this might be diet related?

Further along the path to the west there is quite a large area set aside for what looks like sunflowers and clearly the Goldfinches will have taken advantage of that food source, so I wondered if perhaps that has had an effect?

Other than being cropped, the pictures below are straight out of the camera.
