Out of curiosity I googled and discovered Oldham Microscopical (sic) and Natural History Society (est. 1864)who were meeting in Werneth House (aka Werneth New Hall) until a few years ago. A helpful chat with the caretaker there when it reopened this week revealed they now meet at Oldham Library, as confirmed today on their Facebook page biggrin

Just in case you haven't seen it, below is a link to the current groups page on the main website;

https://www.manchesterbirding.com/whos-who.html

Historically Manchester did have a number of local societies, the Manchester Ornithological Society formed in 1954 and ran until circa 2010. At its peak it had over 200 members, but numbers declined dramatically this century.

It is only Leigh OS and Stockport BS that are active in regular group meetings (both have their own websites where further info can be found), outside of the local RSPB groups.

I would suggest numbers of individuals involved in bird clubs have declined directly in line with the technological advancements associated with birding. At one time the only way of finding out what birds were around locally was to join a club and speak to other members. We now do that at a touch of a button!

Cheers

Rochdale Field Naturalists are always pleased to welcome new members. We run monthly talks in the winter and regular local walks and coach trips. The walks and coach trips are not exclusively bird focused, but you'll find lots of interest during most of them.

You can also find them on Facebook.

Hi, is there anyone who would be interested in meeting up in North Manchester, or Manchester in general, to go Birding as a group? Modern technology is grand, but its quite lonely unless we can meet. I know there are groups outside of Manchester but it seems odd that a city of this size has no club itself.
