Many birders are discovering the wonderful world of moth trapping, catching moths, identifying them and then releasing them. The records are submitted to the County Moth Recorder and citizen science is in action once again!!
The most common way of trapping moths is through the use of a moth trap, at its simplest a box with a light source which attracts the moths in. I do pursue this hobby and love the experience every morning opening up the trap and not knowing what I might have caught. I have been asked by many friends and folk I meet how they could start this hobby. One way is to buy a complete set up but that can be quite pricey. More satisfying is to build your own trap, and it will save a lot of pennies doing it that way! I have recently built a trap, a labour of love, and used almost all recycled materials in the build. The result is a much more robust and well-built trap than one I could buy and I have the satisfaction of knowing that it has good 'green' credentials.
