RE: Limefield quarry (sand hills)

Gorses quarry.     South end feeders, becoming quiet at these feeders recently, apart from the bullfinch/coal tit battle..many of the birds appear nervous, not lingering on the feeders but darting in grabbing some food and returning to the trees. In contrast the north end feeders are a hive of activity since I relocated them. The long tailed tits were very active as were the house sparrows.

Around the quarry,    The rooks were in the trees near Welsby farm again. There are at least 7x great tits singing, spread throughout the quarry, along with coal & blue tits and an increase of bullfinches with 5x males calling.

Gorses quarry,  morning visit.  South end feeders, brilliant time spent watching a bullfinch defending the sunflower hearts from all comers.the coal tit looked like Rob Burrow tormenting the Wigan front row,it was hilarious.the bullfinch would chase it off and it just shot round the tree and back onto the blind side of the feeder.

North end feeders,  long tailed, blue, coal & great tit, chaffinch & wood pigeon. The jay I mentioned yesterday has obviously won as the feeder is on the floor in bits.

The rooks from Sunday were over in the fields By leeks water along with jackdaws & magpies. 48x Canada geese on the other field.

Gorses, quarry,    South end feeders,    Quiet.  Singles of blue tit & chaffinch on feeders (even after moving on and returning later) blackbird and robin on floor.

Cleared area (for new build houses, but not used) 2x meadow pipits.

North end feeders,     4x long tailed tits, blue tit, great tit, coal tit ,bullfinch, chaffinch, wren, robin, blackbird wood pigeon & a jay. The jay removed the cover from the peanuts and helped itself to full peanuts from above. This explains why I have been picking it up every morning!

Around the quarry,     Kingfisher(flew in past me from windacre lodge direction) great tit, wren & mistle thrush all singing. 25x rooks in trees by Welsby farm, 5-6 would fly off at a time only to return a few moments later, when another group would go. I have never seen rooks show any interest in the quarry before, the nearest rookeries being summerseat or birtle, here's hoping, but the local carrion crows and magpies didn't look impressed!

Walmersley golf club fp   Pairs of coot & mallard(x2) on pond by 4th tee, 3x pied Wagtail black headed gull and a common gull. Kingfisher flew down from quarry, didn't settle on pond and contineed on to windacre

Nothing on leeks water but fields around held 75x Canada geese, mixed flock of gulls jackdaws and then the 25x rooks flew down.

Over head throughout a steady flow of large gulls north, herring mainly with small groups Of both great and lesser blackbacks.

that took me bloody ages. Cheers Peter.

Morning walk.  Gorses quarry.  South end feeders. Food all gone, 4x blue tits & a robin waiting for me to fill the feeders ( is it possible for a robin to look at me in the same "tone of voice" as the wife uses? ).soon joined by 2x coal tits and 3x goldfinches .

rest of quarry and north end feeders very quiet. Over head were a group of herring gulls just wandering around but others in a steady but constant flow north, I counted 60+heading north with purpose, not drifting .

Walking up to the quarry this morning Iheard a green woodpecker, on arrival at the south end feeders it was on the ground beneath.nothing else was on the feeders but the trees around held lots of the usual birds. The woodpecker flew away but everything else remained wary, and would not approach the feeders.

North end feeders.   Blue, great & coal tits, robin ,blackbird , chaffinch&dunnock

Around quarry         Long tail tit flock with tree creeper and nuthatch, wren, goldfinch, bullfinch, jay, magpie & wood pigeon.

Walmersley golf club footpaths around lower holes   House sparrows in good numbers, first for a good while! Singing mistle thrush. Looking over Leeks water was a buzzard surrounded by 16 magpies.

Windacre lodge.   7x cormorants  3 goosander coots ,moorhen & mallard.

Is it also known as Gorses Quarry? Or is that a different site?

Sorry, ITried to put it on the Walmersley area thread ,but obviously failed.

Limefield is just north of Bury, near Walmersley. The quarry is just west of lowes park golf club.

Late afternoon walk produced gulls towards ash worth moor res. Jackdaws south. and a magpie roost in the quarry that I had no idea was there!

Limefield quarry (sand hills), near Walmersley

this is my first attempt at this so stand by.  The site is a disused quarry dominated by silver birch and aspen with older trees scattered within. It covers approx five acres.        Morning walk with Josh (springer spaniel).                     At the feeders   Robin, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, chaffinch, blackbird, magpie and carrion crow.

Elsewhere in the quarry.  Goldfinch, bullfinch, wren, song thrush, woodcock(thanks to Josh) wood pigeon and a great spotted woodpecker.

over, 2x raven and a steady flow of big gulls heading north, mainly herring gulls and greater black backed gulls.

hope this makes sense,I m not putting times in as it will be obvious how long it took me to type this.
