That's a separate argument to whether nuclear power is a good thing. Personally, I think nuclear (fission) power is an essential factor in postponing Climate Change - I know many here will politely disagree with that, but the reality is either CC, or increased nuclear plus renewable. Unfortunately, nothing else can satisfy energy demands, and CC is approaching (or passed) "tipping points", ie: Points of No Return. EDF runs nuclear in France, where they are 75% nuclear and have never had any problems
I don't think Ian will want a big debate on the merits of nuclear power here, I just want to emphasise the point that there isn't a happy solution. I'm in touch with a couple of CC specialists, and they would say that CC is far more imminent & catastrophic than is acknowledged by the public, politicians, and particularly some overseas governments
I think the key objective of this petition has to be to provide a strong case for mitigation - during construction & operation, and to enhance other nearby sites
EDF Energy are planning to build a new nuclear power station, Sizewell C, directly on the border of RSPB Minsmere nature reserve, which is home to over 6000 different kinds of animals, plants and fungi. This could have devastating consequences for nature. The build could destroy an area equivalent to 10 football pitches of protected wildlife site Sizewell Marshes, which is managed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Legally protected animals like otters, water voles and marsh harriers could lose their homes.
