Have been visiting area since before work commenced on wetland. See thread River Irwell for some of previous sightings. The site is called "Castle Irwell Wetland"

Pleased to announce the flood basin is now officially open. Can be accessed from Cromwell road, littleton road and Kersal dale. Parking is bit restrictive but littleton road is best place.

Just been featured on the lunchtime news.
To be open in the spring but looks viewable from the footpath along the riverbank

I'm not sure how public the site is yet Roger, it certainly hasn't been up to now but I believe plans are to open it up but to what extent I'm not sure.

Just seen on the BBC local news that a flood relief area has been created on 12 acres of land at Lower Kersal on a loop of the River Irwell in what was possibly part of the old racecourse area?.It's described as an "Urban wetland area" and looking on Google Earth looks like a series of scrapes and pools which could possibly be great for wader passage and maybe a few duck, providing of course there's little disturbance.Be interesting to see how it progresses.
