Its come to my attention that there seems to be another outbreak of trichomoniasis (or canker) in greenfinchs. This is a tiny protozoan parasite that creates swelling in the throat as it forms a cheesy type puss. This usually infects pigeons but is also infecting some finches. This condition is treatable in most cases and anyone who finds a sick bird (not dead ones) will need to contact greenmount bird hospital on 01204884086. Information can be found on how to reduce the spread of this if any cases come to light on bird feeders. It is spread largly through saliva and will not transmit by association alone and will not affect us, dogs or cats etc. (www.rspb.org.uk/community/wildlife/f/14005/t/20464.aspx) Please do not panic, it's possible you may not get a case or may get an isolated one but especially if you have pigeons visiting your garden, you need to keep a close eye out. At least this explains why I'm not seeing as many greenfinchs as I used to and this itself is somewhat of concern.
I have had one case and my feeders are nice and clean so I'm not overly worried at this point and I'm hoping it was an isolated case.
My line of work had ment I have become quite acustomed to this parasite and I've mostly seen cases in wood pigeons and feral pigeons and very few in others. Watch out for birds fluffed up and seems to be tired/ or worn out looking.
Many thanks.
