I took a chance on a reported bird on Good Friday last year, at Treales up Preston way. I'm glad I did as after some searching in glorious warm weather and not being satisfied with brief glimpses, I was rewarded (and also those who stuck it out) with some excellent viewing of the Hoopoe. It was also down to a lovely family who lived at the farmhouse where the Hoopoe decided to feed, who asked us to come into their garden and watch it to our heart's content. Thing is, it didn't hang around as it had vanished the next day so my point is that it might not have been a misidentification, it just could've been a short stayer! Sometimes it pays to go at the first opportunity. Cheers Rob
Thanks for the info Sid, I will go and have a look at the website. Ian, I think you're right as it was just one report and as I am not prepared to cover 250 hectares on foot tonight after work then I guess I will wait until another time, maybe one day I will manage to be in the right place at the right time! Thanks!
It was certainly reported on the national bird information services but sounded like a brief sighting. As for verification "you pays your money and your and you takes your choice"
There are reports of a Hoopoe at Thurstaston Common/Royden Park yesterday according to the rare bird alert. Does anyone know if the sighting has been verified? I always wanted to see a Hoopoe locally but so far didn't manage it and I've also never heard of this location (until I just googled it) so i'd be interested in any further info if anyone has?
Rene most sightings on the Wirral are reported on http://www.deeestuary.co.uk/.
As there was no Hoopoe reported on there yesterday and none so far today it was possibly an incorrect report/misidentification.
Always worth checking the DeeEstuary site it covers many of the locations over there.
