A title like that has got to attract the attention of our best Larophiles hasn't it?

Basically it's just something different I observed last night. Normally when I'm round Viridor Wood in he late afternoon or early evening, all the gull movement is generally north westwards towards the Wigan Flashes presumably. Last night around 4pm there was a significant movement of Black - headed Gulls in a southerly direction. Generally away from the flashes, and not in the direction of Pennington Flash. I can't think of any significant roosts south of Ashton in Makerfield, and looking at google maps, the next largest waterbody they would have encountered on the flight path would have been the Mersey around Richmond Bank. Not somewhere I've ever thought of as evening roost site! But more surpring to me was the obviously late movement of such a number of gulls (I would guestimate over 1000 in 20 mins) with no obvious roost site on the flight path. Interestingly there were very few large gulls with them.

Probably just the musings of a birder trying to find something inspiring in a generally bird free couple of days, but thought it was interesting enough to share.
