One of the reasons people used to believe that Swallows hibernated in ponds (don't laugh!) was because they are often around until quite late in the year.
I have been in Northumberland for the last week,and was surprised to find lots of Swallows still around, Mostly on Holy Island,I would have thought they packed their bags long ago.
