The fact there are only two breeding hen harriers in england and that they are in the north east (none at all in the north west) is shocking.
I have sen Hen Harriers on Newton Park (many moons ago) and at Risley Moss. In fact there was a Male Hen Harrier on Risley Moss last winter regularly.
However the fact they are not breeding in the trough of Bowland is very concerning they are the symbol of Bowland and on the county logo. We sill have the dee estuary of course which always holds a few but they are welsh and not sure of their breeding status.
But overall very very sad. And frankly if they kill a few grouse or pheasant on shooting estates so what I say?
Any game keeper who kills a hen harrier for the sake of someone shooting a captive bred game bird for recreation should be given a custodial sentance.
That is not a rant that is my considered view.
This situation requires urgent and decisive action rather as we did as a nation with the Red Kite 30 years ago.

I quite agree Pete, also see the Raptor Politics website for more information on this situation. Cheers Ian
