As it's Withington Niall, they were probably Canada Geese heading to Sale Water Park to roost.

As Craig says what area are you? That evening whilst looking for the asteroid I had a flock of Canada Geese fly past here in Heald Green.

Cheers
Jason

Without more info Niall it would be very difficult. They could be pink feet, or they could be Canada Geese or even feral greylags. How high we're they, we're they calling, where abouts in GM are you? Canada's will fly from one waterbody to another, but often they're not flying that high (in my experience). Migrating Pink feet tend to fly much higher - unless near the coast when they'll fly lower as well, again in my experience. Pinks footed geese also tend to call a lot and some say they sound like a pack of dogs. More of a barking noise. Canada's sound more like the proverbial goose and honk. Not making much sense am I really.
