A great summer for butterflies, with the following this afternoon in the garden
Speckled Wood - abundant Large White Small White Green-veined White Peacock Small Tortoiseshell Gatekeeper - unusual for the garden, more commonly along Brushes Road Meadow Brown Common Blue - first in the garden this year. In fact, the first I've seen this year.
Wall Browns used to be a common feature, basking on fence panels, but I haven't seen one locally for many years, matching the national decline. Speckled Woods seem to have filled the niche. They seem to do very well locally, even in bad years.
