Stalybridge (other wildlife)

R. Tame. Park Rd.

An Hummingbird Hawk Moth was hovering in some Himalayan Balsam.
Early morning, still dark but very warm.

Monday 26th August 2013, 3.00pm, Huddersfield Road.

A great summer for butterflies, with the following this afternoon in the garden

Speckled Wood - abundant
Large White
Small White
Green-veined White
Peacock
Small Tortoiseshell
Gatekeeper - unusual for the garden, more commonly along Brushes Road
Meadow Brown
Common Blue - first in the garden this year. In fact, the first I've seen this year.

Wall Browns used to be a common feature, basking on fence panels, but I haven't seen one locally for many years, matching the national decline. Speckled Woods seem to have filled the niche. They seem to do very well locally, even in bad years.
