Hi Chris. "Where to watch Birds in Italy" has only one site on L Garda. Monti Baldo, the mountain range between Garda and the R Adige valley. From Malcesine on the east side of the lake a cable-car will take you straight to the top (1720m). Species include Bonelli's Warbler and Eagle Owl.

"A Birdwatchers Guide to Italy" is more hopeful, coupling Lago Frassino with Garda. Western side of Frassino is recommended, Purple Heron breed. Garda should be viewed from Peschiera harbour to Fornaci village. Also Punta Gro - from Sirmione turn left at the sign for Punta Gro restaurant and park by the lake. Walk to the right towards a tiny reedbed for Cetti's, Penduline Tit, Black Tern during migration. Sirmione has breeding Red-crested Pochard.

Also Ponti del Mincio village 3km s of Frassino Lake is a watch point for Honey Buzzard (5000 individuals per year) migrating late August, including Booted & Lesser Spotted Eagle & Black Stork.

I was there Jan 2007, Hen Harrier at Desenzano, 4 Grebe species (NOT Red-necked although apparently regular there), Crag Martin & Firecrest at Sirmione.

Good luck.

Hi all
I am going to lake garda mid September and was wondering if anyone has any tips on places to go birds to see etc.there are a few snippets on the net but not much information really.was thinking of getting a birdwatchers guide to Italy but not sure how much this would cover the area.not a birding trip really(that is what Mrs d keeps telling me!)but while I am there...
I would be grateful for any info especially if it involves walks(to keep Mrs d happy!)
Thanks Chris.
