I was there on 22nd May and the camera was in full operation. Its hard to miss and right above the nest but the birds arent bothered and I understand they have just hatched another chick. Apparently there is another pair nesting nearby so both pairs will be using the lake to fish. While I was watching I saw a changeover and one of the birds catch a fish so I would imagine its fairly busy with fishing Osprey.
The owners are obviously making the best out of having the Osprey there but it seems to me they are doing it with the welfare of the birds in mind and they seem genuinely chuffed to have the birds about and not for any monetary gain. I dont think Bassentwaite have a breeding pair this year although Foulshaw Moss does. It was a very pleasant couple of hours watching Osprey and having a nice cup of tea. If you have mobility problems and want to see Osprey this is the place to go.
Jim the new owner of the Esthwaite fishery has gone to great time and expense- supported by BASC- to fit cameras on one of the nest platforms. The birds used this platform last year to raise a brood and hopefully will return any time now. The cameras are not yet on the web but can be viewed in the café. If you are passing by in next few weeks/months it will be well worth calling in for a brew and some lunch to watch these magnificent birds.
