regarding holiday missfortunes,

on my last holiday birding i was in Florida and covered all the main birding areas, so lots of travelling at night at the end of a birding day needed, on to the next stop to the next holiday inn or which ever was cheapest pre booked the night before on a laptop at the last motel, simple, all was working fine and i was on a trip from cape coral looking for Burrowing owls for anyone wondering to sanford near the end of the holiday, ps i dont have a phone just a laptop while away to do everything the night before via the web so i couldent just ring them, the short version is after driving up and down main street after the 200 mile ish trip for about an hour i just couldent find the pre booked motel anywhere, i gave up knackered needing sleep and got in somewhere else, the answer when finally worked out was i had booked in Sanford Mn not Sanford Fl, my prebooked motel was in Maine 1400 miles in the wrong direction, that night i paid for 2 motels as you cant get prebooked money back, i was driving up and down maine street which is very long for ages thinking where is this motel on maine street, i know its here, i have the address wrote down, im knackered, ive been driving for about 4-5 hours after a 14 hour birding day, its not on main street, its in Bl**dy Maine,

Gotta laugh now,

Not even if we all club together so you can afford to take some luggage next time?

You need to get yourself somewhere more exotic than Skegness perhaps you'd get some foreign ticks which would put even the impressive array of birds you listed appearing on local soil to shame! (as hard as that would be!)

I thought the cranes may have been a tick for you John. Never mind CLF may be good tomorrow, weather permitting!

Get your binoculars out when I go on holiday

Over the past few years by selflessly absenting myself I've provided the rest of you with opportunities for Long-billed Murrelet, White-tailed Plover (twice, Leighton Moss and Seaforth) and White-throated Robin. In Greater Manchester you probably bagged Turtle Dove and Common Crane. And on my local patch I've missed White-fronted Goose, Common Scoter, Black-tailed Godwit and Quail.

I'm not leaving the country for quite a while now so things may slow down a bit.

Cheers, John
