Lunchtime walk along the Sankey Valley Trail from Causey Bridge to Hollins Lane.
A pair (m+f) of Stonechats were on fence posts along the path. The cleared area between the trail and the horse paddocks, which was put in place to deter the public from feeding the horses, now as patches of brambles growing, where an herbicide had cleared the vegetation on my previous visit. The chats appeared to be catching insects/spiders from these small patches of vegetation. Also seen along this part of the trail was a Kestrel which appeared to catch an earthworm from the soggy field adjoining the path, then carry its snack to a railway catenary post to eat. The flooded paddock opposite the former Fiddle pub is still dry except for a few dinner plate sized puddles, which today contained a couple of Moorhens. A pair of Kestrels flew side by side for a while along Alder Lane before disappearing over the horse paddocks, where a single Buzzard was also seen.
Afternoon visit
Short stroll along the Sankey Valley Trail from Causey Bridge to Hollins Lane roadbridge. Birds seen were 9 Lapwings which were flushed by gulls off a very muddy field alongside Watery Lane. The paddock opposite the former Fiddle pub, which dried out during the summer, is now flooded again and today held 3 Gadwall, 5 Moorhens and a pair of Coots.
Sadly I can't walk very far these days, otherwise a stroll along the footpaths to Dial Post Farm from Alder Lane would of been a good idea. I did manage to walk as far as Phipps Brook however, and that produced sightings of 1 Kestrel, 1 Buzzard, 4 Yellowhammers (Including a resplendent male) and a flock of 4 Tree Sparrows.
Possible Corncrake flew in and landed in scrub and willows on flooded field opposite fiddle ith bag. I got a good view of the wings showing a red brown wing patch as it landed. Not sure on this as I didn't see it on the ground but it's worth looking out for.
