It is very much appreciated to all those that have passed on their suggestions as to where to find these birds. I will be up again in the NW over the next few weeks and will visiting as many of the suggested areas as I can.

If I manage to get the pictures I am after you will be the first to know.

Reddish Vale is excellent for Kingfishers and there are Dippers there too.
The River Goyt in Brabyns Park, Marple is home to both birds as is the Goyt at Chadkirk Romiley.
As already mentioned Etherow is excellent for Nuthatch as well as the other two species.

Penghy's hide at Penny is the closest I've ever got to a Kingfisher. The branch that's been stood up in the water just in front of the hide is a good place to wait to take photos of one. Today a Kingfisher came and sat on it just long enough for me to get my camera out and ready. Of course it flew off a split second before I could press the shutter ... damnit! But I'll be back ...

I also got good views of one flying around for five minutes or more and briefly hovering over the water at Teal Hide this summer, but it was too far off for any decent photos even with a 500mm lens. Great for bins though.

Best shots with my lumix i've had for a nuthatch is the hide at Ethrow CP. They feed on the bird table. The dipper Burrs CP BuryI've seen four on the river; or Seven Acre CP Bolton if you are lucky as the path follows the stream so you are close. Last year I was within 10 metres of one that didn't seemed bothered at all. Kingfisher, I have to agree Pennington. Good hunting.

Pennington for the Kingfisher, no doubt. Edmonson's hide has a few posts on there and normally a Kingfisher shows up, yesterday there for 45seconds on the post!

Keep trying, particularly with Dipper its all about patience and how long you're willing to try, I set myself a target to get a good dipper by the end of the year, i'm still waiting!

Thank you to all that posted offering suggestions on where to find Kingfisher, Nuthatch and Dipper.

The weather was changable but I did get out to Greenfield and Dove Stone , I briefly saw 2 dipper at Greenfield ,down river fromTesco and one dipper at Dove stone and one nuthatch at Dove Stone, they were not photo opportunities but at least saw them.

both Dipper & Nuthatch are usualy very easy to see at RSPB Dovestone (near greenfield, 20 mins on train from Manchester)
the life for life woodland on the reserve is full of nuthatch and treecreeper.
as mentioned below greenfield canal isn't bad for dipper, but it can depend on the water level.

If you are ever further south, I can highly recommend RSPB Rye Meads on the Herts/Essex border. The aptly named Kingfisher Hide gives you great views of one of the two banks where they have bred this year (one pair had 3 broods) and the birds are very obliging. Even a lousy amateur like me can manage decent shots of these birds.

Dipper, The Kingfisher Pub, near Tescos in greenfield pretty much all day is OK

Nuthatch, i'd very much say Rostherne Mere, near to Ashley, again all day is OK

Kingfisher, difficult one, I don't know really. Broad Ees Dole, Sale WP is resonable, i'd certainly like to know where to get a really good kingfisher!
