RE: Rooley Moor

Thanks Ian for posting this. My text contained an error. The grid ref should have read SD858180. The Red Kite appeared from the south east over the brow of Bagden Hillocks at 12:20 hrs. It was at low level (not even roof top height) and glided past with the occasional flap of its wings, approx. 50 yards from where I was standing on the Rooley Moor track.

Superb close range views (no wing tags) with its fresh plumage illuminated by the sunlight. It flew north east gaining height. I phoned Dave Ousey who made it up to Cowm Resr (Rossendale) in double-quick time but was unable to relocate the bird.
This is the 3rd year running that Red Kite has been seen in Rochdale and is probably the 9th sighting.

Also seen:
Oystercatcher - a pair in flight
Meadow Pipits
Skylark - 21 singing
Wheatear - 3 males

Surprisingly no Curlew seen or heard.
