Maybe hungry young to feed has led to some daylight hunting?

Saw a solitary Mallard duckling waddling across the grass near the garden entrance.
A Kestrel then zoomed out of the wooded area, shortly after, a Tawny Owl flew out...
With the duckling grasped firmly in its talons!

I know that it is uncommon to see a Tawny Owl hunting in the day, is the any reason for this?

I saw a colony at the carrs a couple of weeks ago, is that the area you refer to Phil?
Not been here for a few years though so can't say if it is long standing or not.

There's a thriving colony of Sand Martins (about 18 nest holes) near Twinnies Bridge. I haven't been aware of a colony here before.

Does anyone who knows the area know if this a is a new or long standing colony?
