Finally added peregrine on the garden fly-over list heading East over the upper end of Guywood Lane towards Werneth Low, carrying something substantial (blackbird?!).

Unconfirmed suggestion that it was around yesterday, contemplating the garden chickens.

'Flocks' of 20,13,13 & 30 redwing over Sunfield estate in a ten minute period this morning (starting 10.10a.m.). Then I had to break to listen to Popmaster! Nothing after that.

On my regularly walked circuit around 'hilltop' (Romiley-Greave-Woodley-Romiley).

Chiffchaff with tit flock at quarry (sorry guys, best I could do)!

30 goldfinch in a not-very-tight flock.

Jays everywhere. 12+ at least.

Having a flu-jab in the morning was nearly as exciting. wink

My Gardener told me he saw an eagle high up flying over early morning. Did anyone else see it?

Thanks for clearing that up Paul. I heard what I was fairly certain was a siskin at the end of the station car park yesterday, but could not convince myself it wasn't the young of another finch species. Wonder what it's doing round here now?

Hi Andy, yes I was certainly suprised to see a siskin but it's not a area I am that familiar with. I had to double check but it was 100% a male siskin and seem to be associating with a couple of goldfinch,they all flew off together in the direction of the swimming baths/canal.

2 ravens low over Sunfield estate at c 10:30 a.m. Making the usual wonderful sounds as they 'danced' with a crow, they made off quickly towards Werneth Low attracting further attention as they did.

First redwing (5) were in trees on Sunfield estate yesterday morning. Today, a chiffchaff is still hanging around with the tit flock.

Late news from yesterday. A single spotted flycatcher using the old golf course practice ground area all the time I was trying to photograph a painted lady. Also tawny owl calling, 3 bullfinches and the usual buzzards over (2). Capped a fine day really.

Big noisy feeding flock of blue, great, coal and long-tailed tits (lots of youngsters) in the trees around the path along the top of the golf course at lunchtime today. Stepped onto the dog-walkers' track in the scrubby field above to look from the 'outside' and found a lesser whitethroat, which was new to me for the area. That fed for a couple of minutes around a small sycamore subsequently occupied by several chiffchaffs following the flock and I think a willow warbler too, though didn't get a good view of that bird.

Whilst checking the cricket scores on T.V., spotted a sizable number of swifts in the distance (through the window, not on T.V.) with an obviously larger bird in their midst. Rushing upstairs to grab bins and then into the garden confirmed it was a Hobby. Even at quite a distance, I thought it had something in its talons as it streaked off very quickly towards Hazel Grove. There were a lot of swifts around tonight, presumably dodging the areas of rain to the west. The hobby must have been tracking them because they were not all the local breeding birds (too many).

First 'migrant' back in the district today with a singing chiffchaff down by the Peak Forest canal where the rail lines to Manchester and Hyde cross (I call it the 'triangle'). This is a traditional site used every year I can recall.
