getting big numbers of gulls going to roost on the Kerry logistics roof just next to my works on broadoak, this evening I managed to pick out an adult Mediterranean gull which did a little fly around & then sat just a bit away from the rest of the gulls giving nice full view
the male blackcap continues to show in the car park of the Trafford park hotel, seen on several occasions over the last 2 weeks & today at 12pm. I'm sure it wont be long now before he starts singing. also male chaffinch & 4 goldfinch today.
A walk to Mossley rd to check if any waxings had turned up on the Cotoneaster trees opposite Chep ...... No Waxings but No Cotoneaster trees either. The entire shrub bed has been removed with only 2 Elm trees remaining. I was only there a short while ago and the trees were full of berries. There are some Cotoneaster bushes nearby opp the Trafford Park hotel and quite a few Cotoneaster trees full of berries on Westinghouse rd between Europa way and 2nd Ave.
A flock of around 60+ GOLDEN PLOVER flew low over my works on broadoak just off Ashburton road west this evening at 9.50pm, they called & were loosing height so were probably going on one of the nearby units where the many thousands of gulls go to roost.
Early evening gull hunting again in the Park. There was a flock of over 300 birds in the Utd car park on John Gilbert Way, one Common Gull and one Lesser Black-backed Gull whilst all the rest were Black Headed Gull. There were small pockets of gulls on a variety of roofs all over Trafford Park including a large(ish) mixed flock on the roofs of units on Europa Way. There does not appear to be any pattern to their movements and its a huge area with very few high vantage points, so all in a bit frustrating! 4 Swift the only other birds of note.
A couple of times in the last week at circa 9pm I've been passing through the park for one reason or another and noticed large numbers of large gulls around. Last Sunday I noticed a flock in the Utd car park on John Gilbert Way on the way into Manchester, when I returned half an hour later they had disappeared. I had a drive around the area again on friday night but couldn't detect many at all. Tonight at just before 9pm I pulled up by the same Utd carpark and counted over 200 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. More were continuously arriving. This is way more than I've ever recorded using Salford Quays at any one time. They must come from far and wide. The light wasn't great and I didn't have time to look at any in detail (for anything more unusual). After I'd gone into Manchester and returned the car park had again cleared. This time I clocked the direction of flight and did a bit of driving around! I've discovered, what I assume, is the roost site with 100's of gulls on the roof of the large warehouse owned by Kuehne+Nagel just off Westinghouse Road. Its one of the highest buildings in Trafford Park and viewing is difficult (possibly one side from the canal bridge on the Park Way). So I'll be back to the pre-roost meeting point at the Utd car park in the week to see if there is anything of interest whithin the flock.
Popped by for 20mins just now (1.25) and was lucky enough to see Black Redstart straight away, flitting around building, in trees and on ground. Fantastic.
Female Black Redstart still on site at 3-4pm , viewed from carpark at the Trafford Park hotel, village way / 3rd ave (cp jnt.of 3rd ave/11th street). I had good views on Sat. and thought I'd have a look again today. I picked it up straight away on a cherry Tree inside the security fence where it stayed for a few minutes bobbing up and down and flicking it's tail occasionally. It then went to the top right hand window ledge picking off flies , then to the spot-lights and next the roof followed by dropping to the ground by the portacabin where I lost it for a while until it reappeared on the fire escape. It then visited the two cherry trees on the 3rd ave side and didn't seem bothered when a chap walked past it. What an excellent find by Steve Burke .
Black redstart still present at 1,50pm today. It was in the trees in the fenced off part of the hotels car park. (edit, I just read the previous posts realising there was a sighting at 2,10pm after mine )

I arrived by bus and tram from Hazel Grove at 10 30 and just missed the Black redstart by some 10 minutes. I was just about to leave at 12.00 when it reappeared at the rear of the hotel favouring the window ledges and a security light. It showed well for 5 minutes before going onto the roof from where it did not reappear. I first picked it up by a repetitive single note call. Nice to see a Greenfinch as well.
After a 3 hour wait the Black redstart finally showed up about 3.30 and then showed well on and off until I left at 5pm around the disused Trafford park hotel
Picture below eating a large fly on the windowsill of the Hotel - More shots on my flickr site later :)

Arrived at Trafford Park Hotel approx 2.30pm after work, and I stayed until 3.50pm.
The Black Redstart was present and showing well when I arrived, very active, doing a lot of flycatching and picking off insects from all over the hotel and surrounds. It gave excellent views and a few times it flew closer to us and perched in the nearby trees. A bit later on it tended to prefer the St.Antony's Centre just across the side street (building with the brown railings).
Just for clarification, with reference to previous posts regarding sighting times if anyone was interested, the last photo I have of it was at 3.22pm but it was still present until 3.30pm when it flew off over to St.Antony's Centre. I didn't see it again for the duration of my stay. So if anyone is in the area checking tomorrow, maybe worth a look there first rather than the hotel.
Lots of bird activity in surrounding bushes and hedges... - Song Thrush 2 - Robin 1 - Blackbird 2 - Dunnock 2 - Great Tit at least 4 chasing each other - Blue Tit 2 - Greenfinch calling from a roof near the shops - Goldfinch small group of around 10 flying round - Grey Heron over - Lots of Gulls over and usual Corvids around
A lovely visit between 12:40 and 14:25. I didn't know where I was going and unless I had seen her sat on the lamp post next to the hotel I would have been searching in the wrong area. Still showing when I left. Nice to meet Joh Doherty and Austin Morley and 3 others who's names I didn't catch. It went missing for about 15 mins but was found round the back of the hotel.
Black redstart was showing very well at 1,30 pm, I left and went back at 4pm and from talking to a few other people there had been no sightings of it since aprox 2,30pm, - 5,30pm when I left with still no sightings.
Yesterday morning on my way to work a sedge warbler was singing on guiness rd next to johns diner, this morning it was still there & managed to see it this time.
A chiffchaff was at irmass industrial estate, Trafford park road as I was on my home from work at 2pm, I stopped to watch it as it was flitting around the bushes calling constantly.
lots of black headed gulls feeding on village circle/village way/wharfside way on my way home from work tonight at 10.05pm. hundreds of them on the nearby roofs of Viking international & what use to be the builders centre. since I started my shifts back in may, when I am on my 2-10 shift I have noticed the number of gulls increasing hugely, espeacialy over the last month, but they don't stay on the same roofs each night they do move around a lot, must be in the thousands now
lesser whitethroat singing along Trafford wharf road up near Churchill way opposite viridor waste management in the compound where the round tanks are on my way home from work at 2.05pm.
on my way home from work at 12.50pm a flock off feral pigeons were being harassed by a juvenile peregrine falcon around the rank hovis on Trafford park road. I stood on elevator road getting fantastic views as it pursued the pigeons, it did not catch anything in the 20 mins I was watching, but got very close on a couple of occasions it soon disappeared out off view.
single female wheatear was on the grass of village circle/ village way/warfside way, Trafford park on my home from work at 4.40pm, despite having a bright orange cycle jacket on it let me get within 15ft of it and then carried on feeding
There's a Wood Pigeon that appears to be melanistic around the Tenax raoundabout, also seen this bird on the banks of the MSC at Weaste in June & on Weaste ETW last autumn
