I've seen a Red Kite hunting for Grouse twice in recent weeks at Bleaklow, just a few miles up from Glossop...Could it be the same bird?
First sighting was 25th April and I saw one again up there late May.

Hi Anthony,

Unlawful killing and persecution of Red Kites continues because of the mistaken belief that they take grouse chicks. In fact Red Kites are mainly scavengers of carrion so would be no threat to grouse.

Cheers, John

smile.gif Try telling that to a Rabbit John!
Yes I agree that they do like to scavenge, but they do take live prey also.

Of course there is plenty of carrion up on Bleaklow so maybe he was scavenging...Plenty of sheep and Hare carcass.

He certainly did clear away every Grouse in the area on both ocassions I saw him up there.

Anthony

Well spotted Andy. I always thought it was a brass Weather Cock that was at the same height as the top of the spiresmile.gif

Possibly the same bird seen by Chris Phillips at approx. 16:15 hrs yesterday flying over the Laurels, Mossley. It was heading in the general direction of Manchester Airport i.e south west but may have changed course taking it over Romiley.

A Red Kite over Romiley at 5.15 this evening going south. It was just by St. Chad's church and not much higher than the spire. It might be hanging around the Chadkirk/Goyt Valley area if anyone is out that way tonight.

Good luck.

Andy
