it is now the third of february you really must do better ian you are two days late with the results i cant take this pressure at the end of every month
Well we have been put out of our misery and how the hell you lot got that hoopoe lark is beyond me, and that buzzard looks nowt like a buzzard, this shows how the camera can lie, if the bird is caught in a slightly out of true most seen natural position, well done to Paul for winning
it was a fight till the end
Hoopoe Lark Dennis
As for the Buzzard not looking like one I really think it does

Not much sign of a bird never mind the Christmas spirit on no 23 from McKEvil. Still I guess, and I'll have to, that a bird is there somewhere, is it perhaps a Turkey Cheers Ian
yes - when I click the November tab I get the new December page ! The original November photos have disappeared and I've no idea of the answers (DONT tell me them !! - I like to read through the theory of the ID). I've cleared browsing history, cookies, etc. Had this problem occassionally in previous months, it always seems to re-adjust after a couple of days. Thankfully I can get the correct page (and answers) over my phone so my purgatory is not extended even further !
I suspect its something to do with my AOl software.
Afraid not chaps. I'd be a fool if I didn't check every update for such simple mistake and the photo is, and always was there? Anyone else got problems viewing it? Yet again, the four Internet capable products I have in home all display both images fine.

Some 'facts' I have discovered in the two years that I have dipped in and out of this competition:
1: Primary projection doesnt lie. That is unless the bird has been photographed at a strange angle/in a contorted shape in which case primary projection does lie.
2. If you think it is, it probably isnt, unless it is in which case you'll probably think your'e being tricked ('cause it cant be that easy) so you'll say it isnt.
3. Plumage means nothing
4. You're on relatively safe ground thinking 'duck spp' if its sat on water, unless its a gull pretending to be a coot.
5. Field guides, BWP, Svensson, Helm species monologues etc are useless, but the observers book of birds can be worth a glance.
6. Never ever ever assume it isnt - see point 2 above.
7. Colours on a monitor are definitely NOT like real life even though you've paid for the most expensive HD super flat screen LCD monitor you can afford. Or maybe its just the strange light in the photo. Either way, dont trust it.
8. You learn new things - like a Juv/female Marsh harrier can look like one of those Golden Lion Tamarin Monkeys (dont believe me? Check out Sept 2009).
9. Paul Brown, Dave Broome, Mark Rigby etc etc are all really good at mystery bird competitions
10. Its flippin good fun!

I got the one I didn't take the photo of but as Ian said I originally sent him the Garden Warbler shot to him as I couldn't decide - and that was after watching it for an hour and having loads of photos... mind you if it makes anyone feel better a very authoritative sounding birder on the day in question mis-ID'd it
This month I have no clue on one and am torn on the other!

Ian Campbell wrote , so, although I've little idea what this months rascals are I'm going to get out my Observers book of birds, have a go and get them both wrong. Cheers Ian
............................. I wasn't wrong, when I said I'd get them both wrong, I did.Still it was fun trying, looking forward to attempting this months. Cheers Ian
I think you'll find John that you were never actually named as getting those birds wrong. Indeed, your name was purposefully and tactfully witheld as I remember

Hmm, i crashed and burned yet again, although I did get the spotted flycatcher correctIt,s nice to see the number of 'official' entrants has increased even at this late stage, I,d wager there,s quite a few closet entrants playing the game, why not send your entry in to Ian,it doesn,t cost owt and if your wrong only you and Ian will ever know you tried ,that,s unless your like me and Mr Higson and admit that now and then we get it wrong,,so come on send your entry in and let McEvil see how popular the comp is.
cheers geoff
Geoff Hargreaves WROTE if your wrong only you and Ian will ever know
John Tymon wrote Not really I've been named and shamed twice ,when I got mystery birds wrongwhy? Because they were my picturesand I still got em wrong ,after they had been manipulated by someone who shall not be named

first time I have had a go at this competition and got 1 of them right which I'm pretty pleased about, thanks for the explanations. I have to be the worlds worst at identification but I am picking things up slowly, so I will have a go at Novembers too.
I feel sick with anticipation with Octobers birds as I have taken a huge gamble!!
I dont think I will sleep until I know the answers!
I feel sick now I know the answers. Never mid, theres always next months delightful pair to look forward to. Just had a quick look and yep, there they are, teasing me.
I will not call him McEvil, I will not call him McEvil, I will not......

Wasn't intended to appear patronising Paul but is merely the truth. I take explaining what the mystery bird is and why the incorrect entries are wrong seriously as it's a major intention of the competition. As such I have to wait until all the entries are in. In the early days I tried to write it earlier but had to keep going back, adding and explaining species, altering percentages etc and it just meant there were lots if errors in it. Nowadays the kettle boils away constantly, providing me with the necessary tea, whilst I write it in one go.
