in America it might be Phil, where they then confuse it with the gull

In actual fact, even nice adult males in winter in this country have a thin cinnamon neck ring but it is very difficult to observe. And so hence their name...

Help asked for, saw my first Ring Necked Duck today and just wondered why it's called this?. There is no ring on its neck, however there is one on its beakconfuse.gif. Can anyone explain?.
