Afternoon stroll 2:50 - 3:40 A young buzzard flew low over the trees by Newcroft Road. Plenty of calling chiffchaffs, just the one whitethroat heard near the top of the rise. A mixed flock of about three dozen goldfinches and half a dozen linnets on the thistles on the bank leading down to the cycleway that used to be a footpath.

Thanks to Tim W and Pete H for the specific location of the Lesser Whitethroat which I heard then saw immediately as I approached the summit. Several more sightings, albeit brief, as it flitted from tree to tree for 3 hours, constantly singing on this hot sunny afternoon. It seems to have a large territory. This is one shy, secretive bird.
