1545 - 1800, meandering walk around the periphery scrub and woodland then back via the Transpennine and down the side path to Loretto Road. I lost track of the number of blackcaps, whitethroats and chiffchaffs, well over a dozen of each and probably upwards of twenty. Two pairs of bullfinches along the motorway edge. The lesser whitethroat at the East end struggled to be heard over three duelling song thrushes in that corner. A thin passage of swallows heading South. A raven riding the thermals high over the motorway, a buzzard hovering high over the stables. No sign of the usual pair of kestrels.
5th July 3:05pm - 4:05pm highlights: territorial display between two pairs of buzzards, one adult bird calling from the cricket pitch while its mate circled around the other pair until they drifted back over the motorway; four young grey partridges very fluffy but capable of flight; singing lesser whitethroat on East of the rise.

Afternoon stroll 2:50 - 3:40 A young buzzard flew low over the trees by Newcroft Road. Plenty of calling chiffchaffs, just the one whitethroat heard near the top of the rise. A mixed flock of about three dozen goldfinches and half a dozen linnets on the thistles on the bank leading down to the cycleway that used to be a footpath.
Midday. Common Whitethroats, Greenfinch, Kestrel, Reed Bunting, 3 x Swallows, 3 x House Martin swooping a foot over the flood puddle, 2 x Swift, 1 x Raven over. 1 x Sedge Warbler showing and singing very well in the SE of the meadow. But no sight nor sound of the Lesser Whitethroat.
Thanks to Tim W and Pete H for the specific location of the Lesser Whitethroat which I heard then saw immediately as I approached the summit. Several more sightings, albeit brief, as it flitted from tree to tree for 3 hours, constantly singing on this hot sunny afternoon. It seems to have a large territory. This is one shy, secretive bird.
A family of willow tits two adults and at least one fluffy youngster in the trees by Kickety Brook on the stretch between the meadows and the canal aquaduct at 5:25pm.
Lesser Whitethroat rattling away at the summit Sedge Warbler 2 singing (poss. a 3rd silent nearby) Whitethroat 18, plenty of young Chiffchaff 10, incl. recently fledged young Raven 1 over
