1 Great Crested Grebe 3 Cormorants 1 Canada Goose 31 Mallards 16 Black-headed Gulls 30+ Swallows mostly birds passing through. A few summer residents still around Edge Lane. A couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers the highlight of the woodland birds
9.20am to 10.20am. Low cloud, constant drizzle, and windy. More like November than July.
2 Cormorants A few Grey Herons still left in the heronry. The visibility was so bad I could not see them from across the reservoir, but could hear them from underneath. 63 Canada Geese 10 Mallards 1 Curlew flying over 3 Black-headed Gulls
On the way down from Greens Arms Road I saw a couple of Meadow Pipits & a Reed Bunting.
1 Great Crested Grebe 2 Cormorants About a dozen Grey Herons, including the young one which has spent over a week standing next to the fishermen 59 Canada Geese 12 Mallards 2 Curlews flying over 2 Black-headed Gulls Crossbills. Falling cones/bits of cones gave their presence away. Very high in the conifers I was unable to count how many but only a few.
My first Red Admiral of the year. Very bright orange newly emerged Chicken of the Woods fungi.

9.15am to noon around the reservoir and on the fields off Edge Lane.
1 Great Crested Grebe 2 Cormorants 20+ Grey Herons, including numerous juveniles at the heronry. One youngster was stood by fishermen at the water's edge below the heronry seemingly without a care in the world. 42 Canada Geese 1 hybrid Goose, the one normally seen at Jumbles 15 Mallards 1 Buzzard 1 Pheasant 1 Moorhen at Broad Meadow Farm pond 2 Curlews 1 Common Sandpiper. Hopefully it's partner was on a nest somewhere. They have not bred here for quite a few years but the water levels are still at a decent level this year. Black-headed Gulls. A few at the reservoir & 80+ following a tractor around the fields. Woodpigeons 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers 1 Skylark (the only small farmland bird seen in a strong wind. No sign of the usual Meadow Pipits & Reed Buntings) 1 Swallow Wrens Dunnocks Robins Blackbirds Song Thrushes 1 Chiffchaff 8 Willow Warblers Goldcrests Long-tailed Tits Coal Tits Blue Tits Great Tits Magpies Jackdaws 50+ Carrion Crows following the tractor Starlings Chaffinches Goldfinches Siskins Bullfinches
9.40am to 11.45am around the reservoir and the fields off Edge Lane. Hardly anything in the icy wind, but as I did not see any Skylarks or Meadow Pipits on my way over from Turton Golf Course I should be thankful for anything.
Reservoir :- 3 Cormorants 20+ Grey Herons 18 Canada Geese 28 Mallards 31 Black-headed Gulls 1 Pied Wagtail Nothing of note in the woodland.
Edge Lane :- 30+ Carrion Crows 1 Skylark 1 Meadow Pipit 1 Pied Wagtail 1 Brown Hare
Not too many Grey Herons in the heronry at 10.15am, but there at least a dozen active nests. 2 Cormorants included the wandering white-headed one. 26 Canada Geese 23 Mallards 28 Black-headed Gulls
10.20am to 12.15pm around the reservoir and the fields off Edge Lane.
4 Cormorants flying over 14 Grey Herons in the nesting area. Some newly built nests were empty, birds away on a mission. 2 Greylags. They took off soon after I arrived. 30 Canada Geese 34 Mallards 2 Pheasants at Broad Meadow Farm 1 Moorhen on a pond below Edge Foot Farm 31 Lapwings (23 near Tom Barn and 8 below Black Hill) I thought I heard a Curlew from the reservoir but no sign of anything yet on the fields 21 Black-headed Gulls 1 Great Black-backed Gull flew up from a gulley below Tom Barn. A bit of a shock whilst I was checking the Lapwing flock for possible Golden Plovers. 3 Woodpigeons 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker 1 Skylark A few Wrens & Robins 4 Blackbirds 2 Mistle Thrushes Goldcrests and a mixture of Tits 1 Nuthatch 1 Treecreeper 1 Dipper on the stream at the top end, between the two footbridges 5 Magpies 35+ Carrion Crows Numerous Chaffinches & Siskins 1 Goldfinch 2 Bullfinches
10.10am to noon around reservoir and nearby fields.
1 Cormorant 28 Grey Herons 9 Canada Geese 38 Mallards 2 Pheasants 4 Lapwings at Tom Barn 35 Black-headed Gulls 2 Woodpigeons 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers 1 Skylark 1 Pied Wagtail. Flew across to Edge Lane from Cadshaw Farm. 2 Song Thrushes 2 Jays 2 Magpies 2 Rooks 30+ Carrion Crows 2 Ravens (one between Greens Arms Road & Turton Heights, the other at the reservoir) Lots of Chaffinches, a few Goldfinches, Siskins all around the reservoir in ones and twos. 2 Lesser Redpolls along Greens Arms Road 1 Reed Bunting on Edge Lane Also the usual tit species, Wrens, Dunnocks, Robins, and Goldcrests.
Heronry now up to 13 birds 1 Cormorant 6 Canada Geese. These resident birds are probably the family from last year's successful breeding 30 Mallards 53 Black-headed Gulls
1 Grey Heron. Even this one took off leaving none around the nests. 6 Canada Geese 23 Mallards 2 male Goosanders 16 Black-headed Gulls 1 Great Black-backed Gull
Still only about half a dozen Grey Herons in their nests. One Cormorant on the reservoir with 6 Canada Geese, 31 Mallards, and 16 Black-headed Gulls.
Highlight of the day was a Barn Owl hunting over fields near Greens Arms Road. Cracking views for over 20 minutes of bird hunting and occasionally landing on fence posts.
